What is my job: 

The Market Café Restaurant Manager oversees the Market Café and works closely the culinary team to ensure our customers have a wonderful experience at a one-of-a-kind, dynamic eatery environment, or enjoy delicious prepared foods from departments such as Coffee, Pizza, Subs, Sushi, and other café offerings from areas including the Wokery, Fresh Foods Bar, etc. In this position, you will be responsible for running a profitable department, as well as ensuring each employee is providing incredible service and meeting customer needs. How do I make a difference?

 Providing Incredible, Knowledge Based Customer Service

  • Possess an understanding of offerings, instill passion in team members for products, break down knowledge barriers and educate team members so they can provide incredible service to customers
  • Implement new programs and products to create excitement amongst both customers and employees
  • Spend time on the sales floor and  café seating area to build rapport with and assist customers, drive knowledge-based service, and create a positive and energetic atmosphere

Ensuring High Quality Products & Ingredients

  • Maintain the overall appearance of the department and pay close attention to detail to ensure area is clean, supplies are stocked, and employees work with a sense of urgency to meet customer needs
  • Use industry knowledge and experience and work closely with the culinary team to improve culinary practices and drive high quality food and incredible service
  • Familiarize self with department and holiday trends, product availability and seasonal favorites, and use knowledge to cross-merchandise with other departments, promote products in display cases, and highlight MENU magazine featured items
  • Collaborate with Chefs, Category Merchants and corporate partners to execute corporate merchandising strategies and ensure delivered products meet Wegmans high standards
  • Order products, manage inventory and handle any problems that arise throughout the department, including concerns with product, quality, vendors, or inventory

  • Oversee all elements and operations of the department, being responsible for sales, contribution (profit), retention, diversity and development, and seeking opportunities to increase efficiencies
  • Prioritize tasks and activities that need to be completed and delegate to team leaders and team members, being sure to promote Simplification and utilize strengths and weaknesses
  • Analyze financial reports and product trends, and react with the aim of moving product, decreasing shrink, and increasing profitability in the department
  • Hold events in the store and throughout the community to create excitement and benchmark with local competitors to ensure Wegmans is staying ahead of the competition
  • Work with the Store and Area Managers as well as team leaders and team members to ensure that company goals are being met and visions are implemented throughout the department

What skills, learnings, and experiences are required?

  • 1 or more years of experience at the Team Leader level or above in a Prepared Foods or Perishable department, or a prior supervisory/coordination role in a work setting, professional group, service based company
  • Managerial/ supervisory experience including but not limited to, interviewing, selection, disciplinary action, employee development and managing financials
  • Demonstrate teambuilding by communicating a common purpose, empowering team members to contribute their best and selecting candidates with a variety of skills and styles for inclusion on the team. 
  • Use available resources to pursue goals and challenges with the intent of achieving results, striving for continued excellence and taking appropriate risks (Managing the 5 Measures)
  • Possess strong listening skills and hear many points of view without bias, asking clarifying questions to check for understanding
  • Practice process management, organizing and coordinating activities and/ or people to get things done through execution and monitoring of recurring processes to achieve a high level of performance
  • Drive knowledge based service by encouraging employees to learn about products and providing hands-on training that can be used to educate both customers and employees
  • Have a feel for business and collaborate with others to coordinate merchandising programs and other strategies focused on meeting customer needs, inspiring others to act on the merchant vision. Analyze market area and benchmark with competition to identify unique products and services
  • Display and order for freshness: ensure a consistent and fresh look across the department that highlights the peak of perfection and is easily shoppable with the freshest product available
  • Use personal experience and passion to act as a source of culinary knowledge to educate customers and employees while evaluating financials to ensure quality and maximize results

What skills, learnings, and experiences are preferred and will set me apart?

  • Degree in Food Service Management or Hospitality, or equivalent experience
  • Front of the House Management experience or experience working a variety of positions in multi-faceted food service facilities and venues, including restaurants, hotels, country clubs, conference centers, casinos, theme parks, etc.
  • Passion for food and beverages; knowledge of food and beverage pairings

Work environment: 

  • Work involves continuous interaction with customers and co-workers in a fast-paced environment
  • Typical motions include repetitive hand and arm movements, bending and reaching
  • Responsible for moving and lifting an average of 5 – 20 pounds with a maximum weight lifted of 50 pounds rarely
  • May be exposed to various allergens and work environments, including temperature changes
  • Tasks will be performed using and in the proximity of coolers, ovens, stoves and other hot equipment; cooking and kitchen utensils and equipment
  • Will be required to spend the majority of time on his or her feet and stand or walk without a break for up to 4 hours
