Job Description

Department Summary:

The Office of Science Outreach supports our American Chemical Society (ACS) outreach volunteers by:

* Publishing outreach resources
* Hosting outreach events
* Training volunteers to engage effectively.

The programs supported by the office include National Chemistry Week, Chemists Celebrate Earth Week, Kids and Chemistry, Chemistry Festivals, the Outreach Training Program, Festival Training Institutes, and the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad.

Position Summary:

The intern would be involved principally in filling in an outreach activities database, a web based platform to make it easier for volunteers to navigate Society resources. The scheme for this and an initial inventory of activities will be complete and assistance will be principally required in:

* ensuring all activities are tagged properly,
* ensuring all entries are complete,
* taking and selecting media to accompany database entries,
* assessing utility/ease of use for activity write ups.

The position requires basic knowledge of chemistry and provides an opportunity to expand communication, web design, and community engagement skills.

Primary Responsibilities:

* Activities Database
* Build out activity pages with priority placed on activities selected by the Committee on Community Activities for use at the ACS San Francisco National Meeting
* Monitor completion of activity write-ups
* Assess utility of activity write-ups and web design
* Ensure adequate media (photographs, diagrams, videos) are present to fully describe each activity
* Prepare and perform consistently with a production time line
* Recommend next steps for database completion at the end of the internship

* Community Engagement
* Assist in maintenance of LinkedIn based interest groups for:
* International outreach grant winners
* Chemistry Olympiad alumni

* Suggest feasibility/utility of building and/or maintaining similar digital communities
* Summarize recommendations for digital community maintenance after their departure
* Assist in planning of the ACS Presidential Outreach Event for the ACS San Francisco National Meeting, with a particular focus on activity selection and preparation.

Education Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be going into their junior or senior year of college, pursuing a degree in Chemistry or related science.

Required Qualifications:

* Volunteer experience in science outreach a plus
