Job Description

The Museum of the Rockies at Montana State University (MOR) has earned an international reputation for its paleontology research and is renowned for its field research program. MOR holds one of the largest collections of dinosaur fossils collected in the United States and is designated as a repository for specimens collected on federal and state lands. MOR is seeking a part-time Assistant Fossil Preparator who will be dedicated to preparing fossils related to an in-progress National Science Foundation funded study on fossil preservation and Mesozoic Ecosystems. Funding for the position is available through September 2021.

Duties and Responsibilities

Fossil preparation including work with pneumatic tools.
Creating conservation cradles for prepared fossil specimens.
Assisting with the molding and casting of fossils.
Moving fossils and other paleontological materials, maintaining accurate records of projects, assisting with exhibit installation, and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

High School diploma or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of fossil preparation techniques with the ability to determine the appropriate application on a case by case basis. A general knowledge of laboratory conservation materials used in fossil preparation.

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

At least 3 years of laboratory fossil preparation experience including the preparation of large vertebrate fossil specimens.
Demonstrated general knowledge of molding and casting techniques and materials.

Work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
Ability to see both the big picture and the small details to bring a project to conclusion
Demonstrated self motivation and ability to independently follow through on tasks and projects to completion within an established deadline
Will have a strong work ethic and a commitment to the ethics of the SVP and PRPA.

Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funding. Funding for the position is available through September 2021.

Physical Demands

Must be able to move a minimum of 50 pounds
Regular exposure to dust and fumes as well as chemicals used in fossil preparation, molding and casting in the lab.
