Job Summary

The Assistant Outreach & Education Manager coordinates and oversees City Markets outreach efforts, internal and external education & classes and community relations. This position has primary responsibility for creation and coordination of the Co-ops educational programming, development of recipes and informational brochures, scheduling of individualized programming and hosting of onsite and offsite educational groups. As part of the Community Engagement Department, they will promote sales and product knowledge as well as an understanding of the evolving local food landscape through education, tours, classes and other outreach efforts. They assist in updating web content, present briefings and provide articles and posts for the e-newsletter, blog and social media, and help share the Co-op story in a variety of different venues. They work to fulfill City Markets goals of providing consumers with access to progressive social, environmental, and healthful choices; helping residents enjoy an enhanced quality of life; strengthening the local food system; supporting the cooperative model; and ensuring our Members have a sense of pride in their Cooperative.

General Accountability

The Assistant Outreach & Education Manager is responsible for providing the highest level of service possible to our customers, vendors, co-workers and community. This position is also required to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and contribute towards a positive work environment that requires the highest standard of personal conduct and excellence.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position is responsible for the oversight of educational programming and outreach events at the Co-op.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

* Implement and oversee all public-facing educational programming including monthly class offerings, offsite events and partnerships, and onsite special events.
* Monitor, develop and coordinate City Markets outreach efforts including reviewing class and event schedules and making improvements in collaboration with other department members and other Co-op departments based on historical attendance, trends, surveys, staff and Member input, and other similar measurements.
* Manage the Co-op Kids Club Program, collaborating with associated departments to continuously improve.
* Manage outside use of the South End Community Room
* Manage the Community Teaching Kitchen, maintaining equipment, space, and supplies.
* Plan, coordinate and execute a variety of City Market events (and sponsored events) such as Open Farm Week, The Dish, on-farm events, Crop Mobs, etc. Work with department managers to plan educational farm tours for staff
* Promote the goals of the Community Engagement Department and the Co-op by working to continuously improve City Markets outreach efforts.
* Meet regularly with the Assistant Director of Community Engagement and other department managers to prioritize work.
* Conduct recipe tests and prepare seasonally-appropriate recipe cards for merchandising in various store departments and maintains their stock on the floor of the store.
* Present weekly in New Employee Orientation on Membership and store tour with educational resource focus.
* Collaborate with other departments to create educational opportunities related to local food, wellness, cooperatives, food education and associated topics for Co-op Members and the community.
* Assist Assistant Director of Community Engagement with creation and use of media plan (including press releases, social media, print and web ads, etc.).
* Work actively to partner with community groups to achieve like-minded goals through sponsorship of community events.
* Research, write and present information on topics related to City Market for various publications and community groups, including City Markets newsletter and blog, brochures, and for staff and consumer education.
* Collaborate with Co-op employees to share institutional knowledge of products and concepts.
* Work with the Assistant Director of Community Engagement on the Co-op Seedling Grant Program, recruiting committee members and conducting outreach to potential grantees
* Represent City Market both internally and externally on a variety of issues.
* Represent City Market at various Community Events
* Coordinate staff coverage of all off-site events including Summervale, Wintervale, Winter Farmers Market, Old North End Farmers Market, Burlington Farmers Market, wellness fairs, UVM Community Fest, and others.
* Work with Assistant Director of Community Engagement and Membership Manager to strengthen Community Outreach Partners and Community Connections programs.
* Work with Assistant Director of Community Engagement and Membership Manager to coordinate and oversee the Annual COTS Tree Sale
* Train Community Engagement department staff, and other appropriate staff, regarding best practices and protocol for leading in-store tours. Coordinate and assist with store tours.
* Collaborate with People and Culture department to create staff education related to topics that overlap with current outreach efforts, including topics about local food systems and City Market products.
* Provide outstanding customer service in all areas of the store with a constant focus on customer satisfaction.
* As member of the All Leadership Team, this position will make decisions that affect workflow and procedures within their department, being involved in group decision making for organizational planning, and implementing immediate and long-range planning as well as tactical and strategic thinking for departmental business needs and personnel development.
* This position is regularly exposed to organization-wide confidential information, including but not limited to, financial, personnel, customer and vendor. A high degree of confidentiality and discretion is required.
* Adhere to policies as outlined in the City Markets Employee Guide and City Markets Management Guide.
* Familiarize yourself with and adhere to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Qualifications & Skills

Education & Experience:

* Minimum of a Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university with a concentration in Marketing, Public Relations, Business Communication, Sustainable Agriculture, Environmental Studies, or a related degree.
* Knowledge of local, natural and conventional foods and the food industry required.
* Public speaking experience and excellent writing and editing skills required.
* Event planning experience preferred.
* Supervisory experience preferred.

Technical Skills:

* Possess basic cooking and food preparation skills, as well as an understanding of proper sanitation practices.
* Computer proficiency and detailed working knowledge of the following computer programs: Outlook, Word, Excel, Drupal, Adobe Suite. Working knowledge of html code and website design.
* Proficiency with email marketing programs.
* Proficiency with current use of social media, blogs, and related programs and applications, e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Hootsuite, Pinterest, WordPress, Instagram, etc.
* Working knowledge of web site content management systems, web design and associated analytics.
* Proficiency with digital photography.

Travel Requirements

* This position will occasionally be required to work at other City Market locations for coverage or to attend required meetings, trainings, etc. Significant evening and weekend availability required. Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Work Environment & Physical Ability

* This job predominantly operates in a professional office environment with noise levels varying from quiet to moderate in shared office spaces. This job also operates in a kitchen environment, housed with equipment such as ovens, stoves, dishwashers, slicers, coffee machines, steamers, mixers, chefs knives, etc. The employee is frequently exposed to heat, steam, fire and other hazards.
* This is largely a sedentary role; however, ability to occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc.
