Job Description

What Your Job Will Be Like

The Science and Technology Advancing Resilience for Contested Space (STARCS) internal research and development campaign at Sandia National Laboratories is recruiting top talent from prestigious colleges and universities who are interested in developing technologies for pathfinding space-based solutions to national security problems. These paid internships provide opportunities for students to collaborate and receive mentorship from multi-disciplinary and multi-mission experts at Sandia National Laboratories. The skills learned during these internships provide the recipient with the ability to solve research and development problems from a practical systematic perspective and the ability to network with leading technical students and Sandia staff.

We are interested in students with a passion for research areas that include cyber security, advanced materials research such as metamaterials, space-based electronics, radiation hardening, generative adversarial networks (GANs), software and hardware-in-the-loop (SWIL & HWIL) testing, high-fidelity modeling and simulation, and multi-phenomenology (visual, infrared, RF, etc.) remote sensing. Given the multi-disciplinary nature of space engineering, our program is interested in students pursuing degrees in the following majors, in alphabetical order:

* Aerospace, Aeronautical, or Astronautical engineering
* Computer engineering or Computer science
* Cyber engineering
* Electrical engineering
* Mathematics
* Mechanical engineering
* Systems engineering

Qualifications We Require

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

* Earned bachelor's degree
* Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
* Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
* Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
* U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your graduate program, please apply to an undergraduate intern position.

Qualifications We Desire

* Proficiency with MatLab, C++, Python, or another coding language
* Experience with sensor phenomenology such as optical, multispectral, and radar
* Experience with astrodynamics
* Experience with electrical and mechanical systems integration
* Experience solving problems in applied mathematics
* Experience with image and signal processing algorithms
* Experience with lab-based experimentation
* Experience with development of hardware solutions
* Good oral and communication skills
* An interest in year-round internship opportunities
* An interest in pursuing a graduate or PhD degree

About Our Team

The purpose of the Science and Technology Advancing Resilience for Contested Space (STARCS) internal research and development campaign is to deliver innovative technologies that significantly advance the nation's capabilities to maintain and expand its freedom of action in the space domain. As part of Sandia's larger Space Mission Engineering Program, STARCS supports research and development of solutions in the areas of Space Situational Awareness (SSA), Space Protection, and Space Control and bridges the gap between Science, Technology, and Engineering (ST&E) and Mission impact.

STARCS conducts research and engineering in support of three primary application areas:

* Threat-Defended Hardware: Technologies to understand the impact of hostile environments on processors and the development of radio frequency and electro-magnetic hardened devices, circuits, and systems.
* Cognitive Analytics: Software to rapidly and autonomously detect, adapt, and defeat threats on-board space systems
* Sensor Protection: Technologies for protecting critical sensors by preventing exposure to harmful natural and man-made effects

The STARCS Mission Campaign (Department 6353) is also responsible for university collaborations and nurturing strategic partnerships with various government agencies, universities, and industry partners operating and supporting space missions.

Security Clearance

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia and will require uncleared access for greater than 179 during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
