Job Description

Salary Grade/Minimum Salary:

13/Minimum: $35,500

Department Profile:

The Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology & Plant Pathology is a comprehensive department with an academic, research and service mission. The Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the College of Agriculture and Life Science, and currently advises approximately 330 undergraduates and 60 graduate students.

Area of Specialization:

Outreach Education and Marketing Strategies

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Coordinates trapping schedules of several statewide pest survey teams, and occasionally runs routes themselves.

2. Occasionally runs insect trapping routes, and instructs student workers on trapping procedure.

3. Develops and maintains the program image of various outreach programs and any events as a result of outreach efforts.

4. Creates graphics and other program related imagery to be used in a variety of online and print capacities.

5. Develops new teaching strategies that help reach as wide an audience as possible statewide with various messages important to the safety and care of Mississippi as it relates to insects, biodiversity and conservation.

6. Teaches and leads presentations at various events throughout the state including scientific meetings, state fairs, agriculture events, and school classrooms.

7. Maintains existing websites and web applications including multimedia development and web editing.

8. Develops and maintains a comprehensive social media strategy to expand our reach and to establish social media as a sustainable communications channel for building our MSU brand.

9. Assists in integrating social media into overall marketing initiatives for the department.

10. Creates giveaway product designs and works with local and out of state printers to bring them to life.

11. Creates and edits video projects.

12. Serves as liaison to university ITS department.

13. Manages a team of several student workers and supervises their work on a wide variety of projects.

14. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with area of focus in Communication, Marketing, Graphic Design, or related field with a minimum experience of 3 years plus the education listed in essential duties and responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design, Informational Technology, Computer Science, or a related field. Experience with Content Management Systems.

Intermediate to advanced experience with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office. Experience with Digital Photography. Knowledge and experience with printing processes and printers

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Skills in the maintenance, installation, and upkeep of websites using a content management system with ability to interpret web metrics.

2. Knowledge about social media platforms and various strategies specific to each.

3. Basic knowledge of insects

4. Skills related to graphic design with an emphasis on branding and marketing.

5. Experience managing budgets, including grant funds.

6. Computer skills such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, google drive.

7. Excellent interpersonal, communications, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

8. Excellent public speaking skills with the ability to teach a variety of technical topics to all ages.

9. Experience with making presentations and leading meetings.

10. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

11. Ability to develop, plan, and implement short and long-range goals.

12. Ability to prioritize competing demands and meet deadlines.

13. Ability to innovate and work as both a team member and team leader.

14. Ability to organize and manage projects and prepare a written plan with objectives, actions, milestones, budgets, timelines, success measurements, and evaluation methods.

15. Ability to anticipate barriers to project completion; plan and manage contingencies.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1. Requires limited lifting of files, records, and insect drawers with most work taking place indoors.

2. Light fieldwork requires ability to drive and includes exposure to the outdoors and associated unpredictable weather.

3. Frequent, externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one's control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position.

4. Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.

5. Travel throughout Mississippi to various events and field sites will be necessary with some overnight stays required on occasion.
