Job Description

What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a Graduate Summer Student for The Summer Product Realization Institute for Nuclear Weapons (NW SPRINT). The selected candidate will participate in a competition that challenges teams to think outside the box and develop an innovative approach to solve a traditional problem at Sandia. The teams working with mentors from a variety of technical backgrounds across the Labs will have the opportunity to experience an entire product R&D lifecycle: from some aspect of design and fabrication to acceptance and qualification. It is expected that this summer's internship will focus on determining the viability and performance of a realized component using a combination of modeling and simulation tools in tandem with experimental testing.

Given the multi-disciplinary nature of working on the development of agile and novel concepts, our program is interested in students pursuing degrees in the following majors, in alphabetical order:

* Computer Engineering
* Computer Science
* Electrical Engineering
* Mathematics
* Mechanical Engineering
* Materials Engineering
* Physics
* Systems engineering

The selected candidate will perform entry-level work within a research and development, science and engineering environment working in conjunction with multi-disciplinary Sandia staff on projects that involve applying integrated technical judgment--which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses. Additionally, they will support work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying an understanding of engineering and scientific principles. The selected candidate will assist in the creation and application of scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems.

On any given day, you may also be called on to:

* Assist Sandia National Laboratory Staff Members in observing and/or conducting experiments
* Perform modeling and simulation analysis
* Gather and analyze data
* Assemble hardware
* Other duties assigned under the direction of a Staff Mentor

Qualifications We Require

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

* Earned bachelor's degree
* Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
* Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
* Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
* U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your graduate program, please apply to an undergraduate intern position.

Qualifications We Desire

* Hard working and experience troubleshooting and building capabilities involving electrical, mechanical, materials, aeronautical and optical components
* Understanding and experience with system integration planning and requirements
* Experience with finite element analysis, experimental methods, model validation and calibration, numerical methods, and measurement systems
* Ability to break down a complex problem into simple terms
* Think critically about complex, open-ended problems
* Hands on experience involving design, instrumentation, data analysis
* Experience or exposure to design engineering and advanced manufacturing
* Experience or exposure to hardware assembly
* Candidate should be a self-starter, motivated with a strong desire to learn in a wide variety of topics in multiple disciplines
* Good written and oral communication; willingness to communicate with team members and mentors from different backgrounds
* Candidate should be creative and willing to push boundaries by exploring options outside of the "normal"

About Our Team

The Summer Product Realization Institute for Nuclear Weapons (NW SPRINT) is an internship program at Sandia focused on increasing agility and facilitating the development of novel concepts and ideas on a compressed schedule. Over the course of the summer, each team will successfully perform some aspects involving design, fabrication, analysis, qualification planning, modeling/simulation, and possibly testing a functional device. Each year's challenge is relevant to Sandia National Laboratories' core mission and offers opportunities for student interns to partner with technical staff mentors, researchers from across the laboratory, and other student interns.

Security Clearance

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia and will require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
