What Your Job Will Be Like

Autonomy NM exists to inspire, innovate, and implement the future of autonomy for our national security mission. We are interested in students with a passion for research areas that include autonomous systems, aerodynamics and hypersonic flight, machine learning, deep learning, complex algorithm development, neural networks, reinforcement learning, computer vision, sensing and perception, localization, and navigation/guidance/control hardware and software development. Our program is highly interdisciplinary and designed for students pursuing degrees in the following majors, in alphabetical order:

* Aerospace engineering
* Computer engineering
* Computer science
* Data science
* Electrical engineering
* Mathematics
* Mechanical engineering

Autonomy NM is a member of the TITANS program which supports intern professional enrichment activities at Sandia.

Qualifications We Require

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

* Earned bachelor's degree
* Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
* Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
* Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
* U.S. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

* Pursuing an graduate degree in aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, data science, mathematics, or a related discipline

Qualifications We Desire

The qualified candidate should have experience and a strong interest in one or multiple of the following areas:

* Proficiency with MatLab, C++, Python, or another coding language
* Experience with Linux operating systems
* Experience solving problems in applied mathematics and statistics
* Experience with image and signal processing algorithms
* Experience with implementing autonomous systems and/or machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, computer vision, and localization/geolocation approaches
* Good oral and communication skills
* Familiarity with sensor phenomenology such as optical, multispectral, and radar
* Familiarity with aerodynamics
* Familiarity with electrical and mechanical systems integration
* Active pursuit of a PhD degree
* Minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0
* Ability to work up to 10 hours per week over the school year

About Our Team

Autonomy NM conducts research and engineering in support of three primary application areas:

* Onboard autonomy for sensing and perception
* Autonomy for advanced flight and navigation/guidance/control systems
* Cooperative systems

The Autonomy for Hypersonics Mission Campaign (Department 5449) is responsible for university collaborations, executing an innovative research portfolio in autonomous systems development, and demonstrating technology advancement on flight missions. The department supports the research and development of software, autonomy algorithms, prototype hardware, target recognition, and navigation/guidance/control. We actively partner with subject matter experts throughout the labs to achieve mission successes.

Security Clearance
