Job Description

Manage all crop-related research needs, human, physical, and natural resources of the farm/ranch units of Northern Agricultural Research Center in support of the research and educational programs of the center and the Department of Research Centers.

Duties and Responsibilities

As Farm Operations Manager, this employee will work closely in concert with the Superintendent, Livestock Operations Manager and all faculty Researchers research leading projects at NARC, in conducting these duties of operations manager the person will be the Research liaison, planning space allocation between and among all faculty & Staff. They will also manage activities day-to-day agricultural operations management activities within overall budgetary limits. The Farm Operations Manager and the Livestock Operations Manager will both interact with research professionals, faculty, the Superintendent and the Department Head in general support of the commodity production, research, and educational programs of the research center and the department.
Be the primary liaison with all faculty on research related activated, training, and equipment operation, including space allocation, preparation, management, direction in absence of PI for all crop related research actives.
Manage all crop related activities at NARC. The Farm Operations Manager will: Maintain soil nutrient inventories and prescriptions via field sampling. Plant, manage and harvest commodity production fields. Provide assistance to research investigators in planting, managing, and harvesting research plot projects as instructed. Requisition and apply fertilizer per prescriptions for commodity production fields, and in research fields via other specific protocols as instructed by research investigators. Requisition and apply farm chemicals per determined need for commodity production fields, and in research fields via other specific protocols as instructed by research investigators.
In cooperation with the Livestock Operations Manager, be involved with planning, conducting and implementing irrigated hay, corn and forage fields.
The Manager will be charged with making all daily decisions on the farm including crop production, employee assignments, and equipment repair and replacement.
This person will lead and coordinate safety trainings with all faculty and staff, facility inspections, worker protection standards and other safety related trainings and education.
Interact effectively with the Department Head, Superintendent, faculty and other professionals in managing crop-related farm/ranch units (Fort Assinniboine, Thackeray Ranch, and lease lands) in support of the research and education programs of the center and the department.
Manage crop-related equipment & facilities.
Manage seed stocks storage facilities (seed bins, seed warehouse).
Coordinate use, maintenance and repair of crop-related vehicles and equipment including all research equipment. Co-coordinate use and scheduling of shop facilities with Livestock Operations Manager and oversight of NARC mechanic.
Manage field crop research and production related Support Personnel: Hire, train, provide safety education and supervise support personnel affiliated with field crop production, foundation seed crop production and associated equipment and facility maintenance activities. Such personnel may include full-time classified, part-time classified and seasonal hourly labor.
Manage field crop-related records: Maintain detailed records of pesticide applications. Maintain detailed records of soil nutrient inventories and fertilizer applications. Maintain detailed records of crop yields and associated storage of commodities produced. Maintain detailed Foundation Seed Production program records.
Manage, train personnel, implement and supervise facility repair, lawns and building maintenance.

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Bachelor's degree of Science in an agriculture-related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Demonstrated experience with field crop research operations.
Demonstrated experience with statistics and research design.
Demonstrated experience in managing farm enterprises.
Demonstrated ability to maintain detailed, farming, field and resource mapping via GPS and GIS technology.
Demonstrated dryland and irrigated crop production experience.

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Master's of Science in an agriculture-related field with experience or education in production agriculture.
Demonstrated supervisory experience with associated oversight of annual performance reviews.
Documented hands on experience with precision agriculture, autosteer, GIS mapping and precision application of nutrients or herbicides.
Demonstrated experience or education with cereal crop rotations and forages and associated pest management practices.
Demonstrated experience in managing budgets.

Will have extensive knowledge in irrigation systems, farm implements, equipments, tools, and facilities.
Will effectively communicate with faculty, researchers, staff, and students, and will successfully motivate and supervise staff.
Will have excellent organizational skills and will be a critical thinker who can effectively prioritize and manage several projects at once.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with varied constituents.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

Possess or have the ability to obtain a Montana Drivers License within 3 months of hire.

Possess or have the ability to obtain a Government Montana Pesticide Applicators License within 3 months of hire.

Position requires seasonal weekend and/or evening hours in conjunction with farming activities.
