Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Develops and implements accounting practices consistent with statutory accounting and other governing agencies such as IRS, NAIC, and other insurance examiners. Responsible for ensuring that the various ledgers and records of the company are properly accounted for and controlled. Responsible for coordinating and managing processes to prepare specific audited financial statements for the organization. Partners with Finance leadership to conceive, design, develop, and implement changes and enhancements to reports and reporting controls. Responsible for providing insightful qualitative analysis, thought leadership, and oversight to the financial and management reporting processes.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

* Plans, manages, and coordinates all accounting operational functions.
* Recommends process improvements to enhance service levels, reduce operational costs, and increase productivity.
* Develops, implements, and supports metrics to drive necessary business changes to achieve overall goals.
* Leads multiple projects to ensure accounting requirements and finance controls are built into the processes and systems. Evaluates existing controls and determines action plan to mitigate risk.
* Designs and monitors effective internal controls over financial reporting. Partners with internal or external partners to employ change management and ensure controls are deployed accurately.
* Performs analyses that provide management with information vital to the decision-making process. Example includes how changes in accounting treatment affects the P&Ls.
* Leads and develops the team to ensure resources are deployed to meet organizational needs. Arranges formal training or other experiences to foster learning and development. Develops goals to ensure alignment with the overall strategy. Conducts performance reviews of staff aligned with company policy and guidelines.
* Is responsible for understanding new accounting standards and any new accounting transactions to implement the required changes needed for reporting.
* Performs daily cash management, including payment transactions, planning, account organization, cash flow monitoring, managing bank accounts, and electronic banking.
* Manages the accounts payable function and cost accounting process.
* Prepares internal and external financial statements and provides monthly, quarterly, and year-end analyses.
* Is responsible for statutory filings, compliance reporting, tax reporting, and audited financial statements.
* Provides enterprise level ad hoc analyses at the request of senior leadership.
* Coordinates the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.
* Complies with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements.
* Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies.
* Develops staff by coaching, mentoring, technical training, and disciplining employees when needed; planning monitoring and appraising job results.
* Maintains staff by partnering with Human Resources in the recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training of employees.
* Completes necessary administrative work by (including, but not limited to) approving time cards on a bi-weekly basis; approving PTO and flextime requests as appropriate; completing yearly salary administration; operating within departmental and company guidelines and standards.
* Protects operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential.

* Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.
* 5-7 years of accounting experience.
* Minimum of 3-5 years of management experience.
* Knowledge of PC applications including Microsoft Office and database applications.
* Demonstrated management of general ledger architecture and integrations into the accounting software systems.
* Demonstrated abilities with business intelligence tools and management reporting.


* 7+ years of experience in an accounting or finance role.
* Prior experience working in corporate accounting, auditing, and/or tax at a CPA firm.
* CPA or CMA designation.
* Demonstrated experience with statutory accounting principles at an insurance company or a CPA firm.
* Prior experience working with the accounting and tax aspects of investments, financial leases, and retirement plans.
* Demonstrated leadership abilities, team management, and interpersonal skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

* Directly supervises a staff including Accountants, Analysts, Accounting Associates, and an Intern.

Working Conditions and Environment:

* Work is performed at corporate headquarters, in an office setting, indoor and climate-controlled.
* Exposure to weather and extreme temperatures (hot, cold, humid or windy) may occur when traveling on business.
* Periodic travel may be required, with overnight stays.
* At times variable work hours may be required, such as at month-end and year-end.

Physical Demands:

* Light (up to 10 lbs.) lifting occurs frequently.
* Occasional travel and possible overnight stays may be required; unusual work hours may be required.
* Long periods of sitting and focusing on a computer screen may occur.
