Job Description

The University of Virginia (UVA) has announced plans to establish a School of Data Science, an effort made possible in part by the largest private gift in the institution's 200-year history. The School of Data Science - UVA's 12th school and the first established since 2007 - will position the University as a global leader in efforts to improve society through teaching and research based on the powerful, emerging field of data science. It builds on a foundation set in place at UVA by the Data Science Institute (DSI), a pan-University institute established in 2013 that grants graduate degrees and has a dual mission in education and research. The new School of Data Science proposes to ultimately offer both doctoral and undergraduate degree programs and certificate programs, helping to meet soaring demand for qualified data science professionals in a field that plays a key role in the global information-based economy.

To realize the new School of Data Science vision, the DSI seeks applicants for a Multimedia Designer and Content Producer to help the team build out this vision. The Multimedia Designer and Content Producer at will manage visual communication and multimedia content production using graphic, video and audio tools across the DSI's digital platforms. They will independently conceptualize, design, and produce multimedia and print materials in support of the Institute, including for events, development, admissions, career services and special projects.

This person will also assist in designing and updating web pages, sections, and microsites; develop material for interactive media and multimedia projects; take photographs and source photography and other images for print and electronic publications using both internal and external sources; and conceptualize shoots, edit and/or oversee video and audio projects as a part of the DSI's communications team.

The Multimedia Designer and Content Producer will act as liaison with and oversee the work of vendors as assigned; develop, maintain, and adhere to project schedules; and perform other graphic design and production tasks as assigned.

The University of Virginia's Data Science Institute seeks a Multimedia Designer and Content Producer who is collaborative, creative, detail-oriented, and enterprising.

The structure of the School of Data Science will push boundaries in organizational structure with its lack of distinction between faculty and staff, and frequent joint hires with other schools and entities. Though this position will have peers in other parts of the University, it will require special skills to work with the team as well as other schools and units in new and innovative ways. The DSI encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds to work as a part of an open team environment.

Anticipated hiring range: $55,000-$65,000
