Job Description

POSITION: Medical Assistant

STATUS: Non-Exempt

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Associate Director of Clinical Operations

CLINICAL SUPERVISOR: Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse and Clinical Operations primarily, with Family Physicians and Family Nurse Practitioners providing additional floor supervision regarding individual patient care.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

DUTIES:

* Coordinates unit flow and monitors waiting area.
* Escorts patients to examination room, takes and records patient history and vital signs such as height, weight, pulse, blood pressure, temperature, etc. for adults and children. Performs and mounts electrocardiograms (EKGs), obtains urine and blood samples and runs lab tests as required. Prepares specimens for transport to outside laboratories and completes all necessary forms. Performs vision and hearing tests. Records information in chart as required.
* Assists Provider during examinations and in minor surgeries when necessary.
* During an acute medical emergency, acts as liaison with other Health Center personnel, ambulance service and hospital. Must exhibit professionalism under stress. Assists Provider with treatments during emergencies.
* Provides emotional support to patients during routine and emergency visits to Center.
* Provides follow up communication by phone or mail with patients.
* Handles phone calls and books appointments as appropriate.
* Washes, wraps and prepares all instruments for sterilization. Assists with daily cleaning of rooms, stocking and maintenance of all inventory and supplies.
* Provides skilled interpreting services within the department, and if available, to other parts of the Health Center.
* Works together within his/her assigned team, to ensure that daily tasks are being done and assistance is being provided to the team.
* Assists with the organization of ongoing in-service education within the Health Center and with outside agencies.
* Participates in community outreach activities.
* Maintains current patient education and referral information system in consultation with the staff.
* Participates in training and orienting of new staff.
* Works collaboratively with other Health Center staff in meeting JCAHO accreditation and other regulatory and/or funding requirements.
* Performs other duties as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Medical Assistant Certification required
* Seasoned Medical Assistant experience, 3 years plus, in CHC and/or Hospital setting
* High School education or equivalent required
* Mature, responsible individual; team-oriented
* Strong organizational and communication skills
* Ability to work under pressure and flexibility to function in a changing environment
* Ability to work one evening a week and rotate Saturdays
* Fluency in Spanish required
* Experience in diverse culture preferred
* Experience in health care preferred
* Previous phlebotomy experience is preferred
