Job Description

Property & Casualty Insurance Intern

Pre-Requisite: Enrolled in a four-year college degree program. Business and/or Finance preferred or faculty recommendation.

Overview: This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience and work alongside insurance professionals to begin a rewarding career in the Property and Casualty Insurance industry.

The objective of this co-op program is to introduce new talent to the Property and Casualty Insurance Industry and to develop them through a formalized program of training and exposure to all aspects of Island Insurance Companies business.

The Property & Casualty Insurance Co-op Program is structured for two semesters. Interns work in parallel to completing their college education/degree programs. Interns are expected to treat this opportunity as a job and demonstrate commitment to his/her agreed upon work schedule. Qualified interns will be subject to the company's policies and conditions of employment as are all other employees.

In the first semester of the co-op, interns are placed with different mentors in various company divisions/departments, which introduce them to every aspect of our dynamic company. The intern is exposed to all areas of insurance, including Accounting, Commercial Lines, Loss Control,and Claims. Interns also receive an overview of the company history, structure, and culture. Interns will track their learning experiences through weekly logs. Company employees that mentor the intern offer feedback on the intern's performance. Evaluation of the intern's performance will be conducted by respective managers prior to the end of the semester to determine continuance of internship. Interns that successfully complete this semester maybe invited to return the following semester.

In the second semester of the co-op, interns are placed in a selected and approved discipline/job position in the company.Managers/coaches will have a written development plan of activities and expectations based on a higher level of learning and commitment from the student. Interns will track their learning experiences through weekly logs.On-going evaluations are completed to track the progress of the intern. If the intern is qualified for full-time employment, they may be placed in a position,depending upon skills and experience gained during the intern program.

Participation in Semester #1 or #2 does not guarantee continued participation in the co-op program or full-time employment.

UPON COMPLETION OF ENTIRE PROGRAM: Interns have an opportunity to express their desire for placement. Island Insurance leadership reviews intern assessments and will determine options for employment. Full-time offers will be made to those who have the potential for contribution to the company.

Program Dates:The start date is flexible and will be confirmed upon acceptance into the program. The program is designed to span 2 semesters.

Job Location: Island Insurance Companies 1022 Bethel St. Honolulu, HI 96813

Work Schedule/Hours of Operation: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm

Hours/Week: (Min.): 15 hrs. (Max.): 19 hrs.

Hourly Wage: $11.00/hour

Qualifications Required/Skills:

Education: Students in their junior or senior year of college, and pursuing a degree in business, finance or insurance (preferred but not limited to). Student will have demonstrated leadership throughout high school and college careers. Student will show a genuine desire and interest in the field of insurance. Individual must be willing to participate and complete any insurance related meetings, training programs, and seminars.

Customer Service: Possess a positive, service-oriented attitude toward internal and external customers and employees within the company. Able to handle situations in a positive and helpful manner that obtains the best resolution and service available in the most efficient manner.

Analytical Skills: Ability to research and analyze relevant information to effectively define situations or problems, draws valid conclusions, and identifies necessary actions and/or resolutions.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend written or oral instructions and training materials.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure; and to compile, compute,compare and analyze numerical data.

Office Skills: Type a minimum of 35 wpm accurately. Knowledge of Windows based applications and basic work processing skills required. Knowledge in the use of general office equipment(copier, fax, etc.) preferred.
