The Position:

The purpose of this position is to support the Global Head of Audit - Asset management (GHoA-AM) in providing the Group with a robust independent appraisal service, covering the asset management aspects of the operations for the Americas. The role will be a direct report into the GHoA - AM and act as his/her deputy for the Americas.

Key responsibilities

* Audit plan - Responsible for understanding Group Strategy & Business Objectives to focus IA's work on highest risks
* Audit work - Accountable for scoping, planning & conducting (concurrent) complex or specialized audits, with risk control issues identified and analysed to determine the root cause and findings reported on with related follow-up undertaken on a timely basis to ensure an effective delivery.

Responsible for ensuring work performed meets methodology and quality requirements before delivery including supervision and review of the team's work.

Accountable for the delivery of portfolio of audit needs including overseeing and writing the preparation of strongly written audit reports which enable us to communicate with clarity, brevity and impact. These will be subject to approval from the GHoA - AM, prior to issue. Perform all work undertaken in line with the department methodology and contribute to the development of the methodology to ensure that the service provided continually improves and represents best practice in accordance with appropriate Internal Audit standards.

Prepare and complete a risk-based audit program through the assessment and ranking of the risks identified through audit work.

Use automated software tools to perform audit work when appropriate.

Ensure that audits are completed within the department's Key Performance Indicator guidelines.


* Risk management - Responsible for leading clearance of audit work across the portfolio and communicating effectively to the leadership team and appropriate forums in a clear, concise and influential manner to mitigate risk.

Responsible for building and managing strong relationships with other assurance providers, such as the Risk functions, to ensure a coordinated, consistent approach to risk management is adopted.

Identify the root cause of control errors and propose practical, innovative, and value-add solutions.

Responsible for maintaining confidentiality where appropriate.


* Stakeholder management - Responsible for the relationships with the designated business unit and Executives, building credible partnership based relationships as well as ensuring management of stakeholders at all levels of the business unit including local committees.

Responsible for coaching and supporting key stakeholders across the wider business on risk and control matters as part of audit delivery and knowledge sharing.

Effectively communicate complex information to a wide group of senior stakeholders against a background of continuous regulatory change.

Responsible for agreeing to significant changes to audit scope or budget.

Influencing senior business and external stakeholders.

Owns Executive member relationship for specific business unit/region (delegated by GHoA-AM), as a Business Partner, providing an independent Internal Audit service.

Promote the service of the Group Internal Audit department to management and staff throughout the Group.


* People development - Performance manage aligned staff, ensuring quality conversations are held to set objectives and provide honest feedback to drive performance and develop talent within the portfolio. In conjunction with GHoA- AM, direct, develop, coach and motivate wider team members to enable their professional and career development. Feedback constructively.


* Other - Undertake such other duties commensurate with the position as may be requested from time to time.

Responsible for the delivery of the objectives of the function with minimal guidance required from Head of Audit.

Support the HOF to manage relationships with external regulators to build external presence and the reputation of Standard Life Aberdeen and Group Internal Audit.


* Thinking Strategically - Input to development and support to deliver strategy (including putting customer needs at the heart of everything we do) through ELT and understanding of Group Strategy & Business Objectives to focus IA's work on highest risks. Ensure timely escalation of issues and risks. Champion and support strategic change by embracing initiatives.


* Business knowledge - Maintain an understanding of Group Strategy and complex business operations and objectives across key areas of the company.


* Project management - Balance competing priorities to ensure IA's focus is on highest risks. Managing and prioritising workload and resources within a pre-determined scope of audit, set by the GHoA-AM or GCIA. Responsible for making best use of the available resources (including co-source) to ensure audit needs are delivered to budget.


* Impact and Influence - Maintain independence and resilience under challenge communicating succinctly and persuasively.

Lead through periods of change while maintaining trust and support of team.


* Laws, regulations and standards - Accountable for GIA's compliance with legal and regulatory guidelines, legislation and procedures.


* Analytical skills - Independently analyse information, linking issues and identifying underlying themes not obvious to others.



Americas Specific Requirements

* Keep abreast of changes in US specific regulations, legislation, standards and good practice within the Internal Audit and Asset Management fields.
* Local market insight and knowledge across the region of the asset management sector.
* Prior experience of dealing with the US regulators and / or having knowledge of the same is preferable.

Qualifications and Experience Required

* Undergraduate Degree (or equivalent quaification or experience).
* Professionally Qualified CPA or equivalent.
* Preferably Big 4 professional services firm trained accountant/auditor.
* 5-7 year minimum in financial services industry, recent experience is preferred. Familiarity with the asset management business.
* Internal or external audit experience.
* Broad technical experience accross asset management life cycle in the relevant region covering all business areas including but not restricted to:
* Front office, Middle office and Back office
* Understanding of all asset classes and asset management products.
* Portfolio management life cycle and AM related regulations.
* Business areas of an asset management company including Operations, Risk & Compliance, Regulatory, governance.
* Global experience preferred of managing teams remotely and via frequent travel.


* At least 5-7 years post qualified experience in relevant role.

Conditions of work

* Typical hours are 8:30 - 5:30 buy may be required to do additional hours based on need.
* Flexibility to travel within the Americas and occasional international travel.
