According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for youth between the ages 16 to 24 was 51.2% in July of 2011, the month when youth employment usually peaks. In response to this issue, the White House launched Summer Jobs+ earlier this year, an initiative that challenged businesses and government agencies to provide more summer opportunities for America’s youth. AfterCollege was one of the lead technology partners for the initiative and today it becomes the first company to create an SMS text message app leveraging the Summer Jobs+ API.

Seventeen percent, or 6 .7 million of the 38 .9 million youth 16-24 years old are opportunity youth, meaning that they are not in school or work nor college graduates, according to a report (download PDF) by Civic Enterprises & America’s Promise Alliance in association with Peter D. Hart Research Associates.

Users can sign up for SMS text message alerts at http://sumjobs.com to get notified when matching summer opportunities are posted by employers participating in the Summer Jobs+ initiative.
