GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This position is responsible for ensuring that our customers are serviced at a high level and operations run efficiently to meet margin targets by managing owner-operators and/or core carriers. This individual must have the ability to plan freight and solve problems in a rapidly changing environment by making dispatch changes, communicating to drivers and customers, managing chassis and container equipment usage, minimizing empty miles and direct Operations Coordinators on scheduling appointments that will maximize driver utilization.



  • Communication 
    • Communicate daily with customers, potential customers, owner-operators and core carriers.
    • Monitoring the location of their fleet by use of system tracking or calling drivers for check calls to ensure they meet customer appointments.
    • Proactively communicate with customers on any potential service failures and creating action plans to avoid in the future. 
  • Data Entry 
    • Responsible for timely work order assignment to owner-operators and/or core carriers.
    • Proper execution of legging/street turn/empty repositioning functionality in Rail Optimizer
    • Execution of manual charges to pay owner-operators or core carriers.
  • Delivery Execution 
    • Responsible to plan and execute customer deliveries based customer appointment scheduling.
    • Direct Operations Coordinators on a date and time to schedule customer’s appointments to maximize fleet utilization and lessen empty miles. 
    • Ensure deliveries and pickups are made on time with proactive communication being given on any failures.
    • If a contractor fails to complete a load the dispatcher must develop and analyze alternative solutions available maximizing profitability and assessing other contractors or core carrier’s to service the customer.
    • Responsible for pickup and delivery of container loads from rail and/or harbor and other FTL movements. Must know trailer identification and how to expedite tractors out of rail/harbor.
    • Manage equipment including chassis and containers to negate per diem and demurrage charges.  The dispatcher must manage last free day of all chassis and containers on the street, rail yards and in the port.  They must ensure drivers follow their direction to use specific equipment to mitigate any added expense.
    • Hold drivers accountable for service failures, safety infractions and not following operational direction.
  • Maintenance 
    • Proper execution of beginning of day processes
    • Maintain proper records and ensure information is executed timely and correctly
    • Assist with matching paperwork and filing finished documents
    • Proper execution of end of day processes



  • This Job does not formally manage XPO employees but is accountable for managing XPO owner-operators who are assigned to their fleet and geographic area.  Their fleet typically makes up of 40-50 drivers and their markets are normally broken down to local, regional or long-haul. 
  • The dispatcher is on-call 24/7 if their drivers are having issues after normal work hours.  This can include breakdowns and schedule changes that need route adjustments or provide communication to our customers.
  • The dispatcher directs the Operations Coordinators on when to schedule customer appointments that will maximize the use of our fleet and minimize empty miles.
  • The dispatcher will council contractors on failures to service customers and safety infractions.  They also provide input to Terminal Managers regarding terminating a contract with a driver.
  • The Dispatcher is held accountable for their fleet of drivers meeting target KPI’s including earnings targets, on-time service, turnover, safety and utilization goals.  



  • This Job has the ability to charge clients accessorial fees not initially included in a delivery for additional work.  Examples are additional stops, rerouting of freight, port or customer detention or scaling of loads.
  • This job has the ability to bill the contractor back for per diem and or chassis charges due to failure to complete work assignments.
  • The dispatcher has full discretion to plan the workload across the fleet of drivers as they see fit to service the customers while minimizing empty miles.  They are measured on KPI’s that include profitability, empty miles and cost avoidance. 
  • The dispatcher has full ownership of chassis and containers in their market to ensure the equipment is turned quickly to negate per diem and demurrage exposure. 
  • The dispatcher makes the determination when loads need to be rerouted due to an operational failure, maintenance issue or to meet customer expectations.
  • The dispatcher has authority to negotiate rates with contractors on loads that are challenging to assign or need to be rerouted.



  • Minimum Required Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Minimum Required Experience: 1 year experience in operations or dispatch environment
  • Desirable Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED and 2-3 years of logistics or transportation experience
