GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This position is responsible for ensuring that core carriers and/or contract drivers are dispatched to pick up containers in a timely manner. Accountable for contacting core carriers and owner/operators and customers on a daily basis. This individual must have the ability to pre-plan make dispatch changes, remember the type of equipment used, driver destinations and the length of time to complete each move.

 

THE SCHEDULE FOR THIS ROLE IS SATURDAY - TUESDAY 8am-6pm

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Communication 
    • Communicate daily with customers, potential customers and independent contractors.
    • Real time follow up on “check calls” with contract drivers on all load pickups and deliveries. While in transit, follow up with driver to gain insight into destination time.
    • Initiate and communicate accessorial charges to Customer Service.
  • Data Entry 
    • Responsible for timely work order assignment to core carriers and/or contract drivers
    • Real time input of pickup and delivery information in Rail Optimizer
    • Proper execution of legging/street turn/empty repositioning functionality in Rail Optimizer
    • Execution of manual charges to pay core carriers or contract drivers.
  • Delivery Execution 
    • Responsible to plan and execute customer deliveries based upon appointment schedule required by the customer.
    • Ensure deliveries and pickups are made on time with proactive communication being given on any failures.
    • If a contractor fails to complete a load the dispatcher must review alternative solutions including finding another contractor or core carrier to service the customer.
    • Responsible for pickup and delivery of container loads from rail and/or harbor and other FTL movements. Must know trailer identification and how to expedite tractors out of rail/harbor.
  • Maintenance 
    • Proper execution of beginning of day processes
    • Maintain proper records and ensure information is executed timely and correctly
    • Assist with matching paperwork and filing finished documents
    • Proper execution of end of day processes

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This Job does not formally manage XPO employees but is accountable for providing direction (managing) contractors including planning and assigning loads to contractors.
  • The Dispatcher will council contractors on failures to service customers and safety infractions.  They also provide input to Terminal Managers regarding terminating a contract with a driver.
  • The Dispatcher is held accountable for their fleet of drivers meeting target KPI’s including on-time service, turnover, safety and utilization goals. 

 

DECISION-MAKING RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This Job has the ability to charge clients accessorial fees not initially included in a delivery for additional driver work including delivery to a second location. These fees generally max out at $250 per occurrence with the Terminal Manager approving fees above that amount.
  • This job has the ability to bill the contractor back for per diem and or chassis charges due to failure to complete work assignments.
  • The dispatcher has full discretion to plan the workload across the fleet of drivers as they see fit to service the customers while minimizing empty miles. 

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum Required Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Minimum Required Experience: 1 year experience in operations or dispatch environment
  • Desirable Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED and 2-3 years of logistics or transportation experience
