Best-known as the manufacturer of GORE-TEX® fabrics for garments and footwear, Gore manufactures a wide range of high-performance fabrics engineered to protect wearers in demanding environments-from explorers on the North Pole to firefighters, soldiers, and emergency workers. We are looking for a Textile Materials Engineer to be part of an internal R&D group based in Elkton, MD.  We are seeking someone with a solid background in linking textile processing, structure and properties to performance, as well as a strong hands-on ability and experience in managing global projects.

 Responsibilities include:
  • Focusing on understanding the impact of raw materials, processes and other external factors on the durability of final product performance
  • Linking the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of fibers, textiles, and flexible composites to apparel performance
  • Partnering with team members and cross-functional stakeholders to identify, develop and utilize textile characterization and aging capabilities
  • Leveraging forensic analysis tools to understand textile impact on product failure and durability risk

 

Required Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Textile Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience with textile or flexible composite materials, processing and characterization OR minimum 3 years with Master's or Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Textile Engineering
  • Strong working knowledge of the mechanical behavior of textiles or flexible composites
  • Experience linking textile properties, structure, processing and performance (i.e. abrasion, tear, strength, stiffness, toughness, wettability, adhesion, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of textile/flexible composite testing and characterization
  • Hands-on experience with test method development
  • Experience with forensics/failure mode analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Influence others, lead self effectively, drive projects and follow through on commitments
    • Handle multiple tasks and priorities
    • Rapidly assess technical challenges, apply creative problem solving skills, and build an effective course of action
    • Understand experimental design, statistical analysis, and project management
    • Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills that are adaptable to circumstance and audience
  • Ability to travel: 10%, mostly international
  • Must be a 'U.S. Person' - a citizen (native or naturalized), green card holder, or certain refugee.  Temporary residents (visa holders) and non-US citizens are not eligible
 Desired Job Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Textile Engineering
  • Experience with ePTFE/fluoropolymer fibers
  • Experience with lamination of flexible composites and relevant adhesives
  • Experience working with external agencies/standards committees on method standardization
