The Designer, Workspace designs and develops inspiring contract grade furniture for the West Elm Workspace product offerings. Reporting into the Design Manager, the role is responsible for delivering inspiring and dynamic desking and ancillary furniture products. Collaborate with internal design/sourcing/merchant/marketing teams and external collaborators and brand partners to strategically release products in the market that are unique in terms of aesthetic and value. Drive this development process for each product from initial sketch to product launch. While this candidate will be working exclusively on Workspace specific design projects, he/she will align with our Brand design team on a unified design aesthetic. The candidate will align with his/her Workspace cross functional partners in sourcing, merchandising, and marketing to roll out a specific strategy for our Workspace business. There is a huge opportunity to create a large impact on the business, creating products that are unique in the office / contract market in terms of aesthetic and value.

There are many exciting challenges in this role. The candidate must design inspiring products that provide functional solutions for the contemporary workplace while also cost engineering those products to meet price targets set by the merchant team. He/she must work closely with both domestic and international vendors to realize these designs and overcome the technical challenges of meeting contract quality standards. He/she must also collaborate with merchant/marketing/sales teams to communicate all features of the product so they can market and sell it effectively.

Our workspace division is a 3 year old business which is growing every year -- there is tremendous growth opportunity for this candidate to evolve along with the brand. As this new business develops and the team grows, the candidate has the opportunity to take on increasing responsibility.

Essential Functions:
* Translate business proposals and design briefs into inspired content that responds to market opportunities and overarching brand design direction.
* Generate designs based on merchant business proposals and design briefs, presenting designs to internal and external teams, creating technical drawings and specification packages, reviewing/commenting on/approving product samples, and organizing the annual public presentation of these products at Neocon.
* Develop designs through initial concept through approval for production.
* Own the product development process through daily communication with internal teams, external partners, and vendors.
* Generate design content through sketching and 3D modeling.
* Create presentation packages and product renderings.
* Present designs to internal and external teams.
* Create technical drawings and collaborate with engineering team to create specification packages.
* Review, comment, and issue approvals on product samples.
* Coordinate product reviews to present samples to internal and external partners.
* Maintain archive of approved keep samples.
* Daily communication with internal sourcing/engineering/merchant/marketing teams, our brand partner Inscape, collaborators, external engineering resources, and vendors.
* Support the West Elm Workspace presentation at Neocon
* Develop the annual showroom concept.
* Create the showroom layout and sample package list for the showroom launch.
* Support the execution of the showroom installation.
* Research aesthetic, technological, and cultural trends in both the office / contract furniture industry as well as the design industry at large.


* Minimum 5 years professional experience required. Experience in the contract / office furniture industry is preferred.
* Degree in industrial design, furniture design, interior design, architecture, or equivalent experience required; Masters Degree a plus.
* Experience with drafting, 3D modeling, and rendering is required. We prefer candidates to have experience with Rhino (3D modeling) and Keyshot (rendering), but will accept candidates with proficiency in other systems such as Solidworks.
* Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Outlook are essential.
* Some domestic travel required.
* Candidate to be highly organized, have a strong attention to detail, and to communicate articulately. A positive attitude and collaborative personality are essential.
