About the Position: The Viking Union at Western Washington University is excited to invite applications for its new Coordinator of Equity & Identity Resource Centers position. The Coordinator of Equity & Identity Resource Centers is responsible for providing program management, advisement, and professional expertise to the equity and identity resource centers within the Associated Students/Viking Union. These programs currently include the:

About the College/Department: This position is part of the Viking Union staff and organized under the Dean of Students. The Dean of Student's administrative unit is comprised of Student Outreach Services, the Office of Student Life, and the Viking Union Organization. The unit provides services and support in a diverse range of functions to support in a diverse range of functions to support individual student development and student organizational leadership opportunities.

Western Washington University is a comprehensive state university, highly ranked nationally, with over 15,000 students in seven colleges and the graduate school. The campus, overlooking the San Juan Islands, is located in Bellingham, a coastal community of 83,000, 90 miles north of Seattle and 60 miles south of Vancouver, B.C.
Position Responsibilities: Program ManagementFor all centers in portfolio, facilitate: staff meetings, office check-ins, event planning discussions, organizing committee meetings, developing agendas, identifying tasks that need completion by student staff members, and other managerial and coordinating functions as assignedSupervise the student coordinators in each of the centers named above, as well as co-supervise the Veteran Community Coordinator (in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Veteran Services); secondarily supervise 12-15 students in the various resource centersProvide event and other program management in a manner that demonstrates a commitment to equity and inclusion and that facilitates programming, activities and services that address the diverse needs, interests, and identities of WWU studentsServe as Budget Authority, responsible for development and implementation/annual reconciliation of all budgetsProvide on-site support for program activities as warranted by program needs, often requiring evening event attendanceProvide one-on-one or small group meetings with students who may be struggling or in need of guidance when working on their own identity development, challenging issues facing marginalized student communities, or navigating systems and services of the universityMaintain current knowledge of resources, trends, and issues related to social justice and anti-oppression work as well as other trends in higher education and broadly as related to the positionStudent Development, Advising, Training and EducationEnsure quality events for the campus communityEnsure learning and development for student employees by providing training and resources for event planning and implementation, peer advising, interpersonal interviewing, intercultural and non-violent communication, risk management, assessment, contract processes, publicity, policies and procedures, budget management, and event evaluationServe as advisor to various AS Committees that are related to the advocacy missions of the equity and identity resource centersServe as resource person for AS Clubs that have a social issues or justice-oriented missionAdministrative LeadershipEngage in professional development opportunities that support increased effectiveness in the areas of inclusion, diversity, multicultural and cross-cultural proficiency, and other related topics (this is included in all Dean of Students' Unit job descriptions)Support an inclusive environment for the campus community by actively assessing structures and programs within the AS and within the equity and identity resource centers, and by identifying methods for making positive organizational changeManage processes for and organize the preparation of contracts for event speakers/performers consistent with University and AS guidelinesParticipate in the development and assessment of learning outcomes for equity and identity resource centers, including both the student employee experience as well as the student attendees/users of the programsLead the development and ongoing revision of a multi-year strategic plan for the Equity & Justice Programs, including student representation in that processServe as a liaison to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Advocacy Council (LGBTAC), a university committee composed of faculty and staff, with student representationBuild and maintain working relationships with other campus departments/colleagues related to program objectives or needs (e.g. Campus Community Coalition, Residence Life, Student Life leadership Development Specialist, Prevention & Wellness Services, Counseling Center, Student Health Center, Disability Resources for Students, Consultation and Sexual Assault Support (CASAS), Education & Social Justice faculty, Center for Education, Equity & Diversity (CEED), Ethnic Student Center, etc.)Maintain thorough knowledge of AS, university and state policies and procedures as they relate to student activitiesRequired Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field, such as Sociology, a form of Cultural Studies, Gender & Sexual Identity Studies, Human Services/Social Work, Political Science, Equity & Diversity in Law, Policy Studies, or similar academic areaAt least three years of work experience focused on social justice, diversity, and inclusion work, in either a higher education or community organization setting; work experience as a student may be includedDemonstrated knowledge of equity and social justice issues facing historically and currently marginalized communities, including the complexities of interwoven systems of oppression and the importance of examining the intersectionality of identityDemonstrated knowledge of current literature and theory relating to anti-oppression work and strategies for creating inclusive environmentsDiversity/Cultural Competency - ability to work successfully with a diverse student body and staff, with a strong commitment to creating an inclusive environment for staff and students, the delivery of programs that support the diversity objective of the campus community, and the development of cultural competency skillsExperience advising or supervising college students or student organizationsCommunication: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally, including excellent written, interpersonal, and public speaking skillsManaging Conflict: Experience successfully managing complex situations that involve conflict in a way that allows all voices to be heard and respectedSupervision: Experience supervising others and the ability to train students in effective supervisionTraining: Knowledge of and experience in developing and presenting training programsBudget Management: Knowledge of and experience in budget development and managementOrganizational Skills: Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, with an ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic work environmentTechnology: Experience using and learning new software technology and using social mediaAbility to work weekend and evening hours is necessary as many organization meetings and events occur during these timesPreferred Qualifications: Master's degree in a relevant field, such as Sociology, a form of Cultural Studies, Gender & Sexual Identity Studies, Human Services/Social Work, Political Science, Equity & Diversity in Law, Policy Studies, Student Affairs/Higher Education Administration, or similar academic areaOne or more years of professional work experience in a capacity designed to meet the needs of an underserved, underrepresented, and/or marginalized populationEvent Planning: Knowledge of and experience in planning, advising and coordinating events and activitiesStudent Leadership/Student Development: Knowledge of student leadership and student development theories and their applications in practiceKnowledge of current resources and trends in student activities, educational and social issues programmingAcademic Emphasis: N/A

Salary: $41,430 - $44,000 - starting salary will be at or near the beginning of the range
