A glimpse at the job:

At Wegmans, we take pride in our ability to educate our customers and provide them with unique products they can’t find anywhere else. With over 700 varieties of cheeses and other delicious items, our Olde World Cheese department does just that. As a Team Leader in this area, you’ll assist in running the department and will work with team members to develop their skills and passions, expanding and sharing your knowledge of a wide variety of unique cheese products from around the world.

I will add value by:

·         Performing tasks essential to the proper functioning of the department including ordering with Simplification practices in mind, hiring & staffing, training & development, scheduling and managing payroll

·         Leading employees by example to provide incredible customer service by proactively approaching customers at the service counter and sharing your knowledge about cheeses to help them find the perfect variety to accompany their meal

·         Delegating tasks to team members and empowering them to take on new challenges, being certain to provide timely feedback and annual performance reviews that focus on their growth and professional development

·         Maintaining the overall appearance of the department, ensuring cases are well-merchandised consistent with company standards; showcasing freshness and the wide variety of unique offerings, highlighting featured and premiere cheeses

·         Educating team members on the proper ways to handle, cut and trim cheese to reduce the amount of shrink in the department; how to recognize when a product should be trimmed and rewrapped for the sales floor to ensure the freshest cheeses are available for customers

·         Using passion and knowledge of cheeses, including knowledge of the industry, food and wine pairings and additional information about countries of origin, to educate both team members and customers; ensuring they have the tools needed to make, or help make, great meals easy

·         Assisting employees in setting up demos in the department, ensuring the right employee is performing demos and working to develop interesting, unique demo ideas to educate customers about different varieties of cheeses and ways to enjoy them

·         Maintaining open lines of communication with team members and manager to ensure smooth department operations

·         Educating and ensuring team members are properly handling products, using equipment and keeping accurate logs in accordance with food safety and safety guidelines

  • Customer service experience, preferably in a food service, grocery or retail setting

  • Use performance and career development tools to manage and develop others, working with employees to set and achieve individual and department goals
  • Practice proper planningandstaffing techniques which include managing time and resources
  • Work towards continuous improvement to encourage change; find ways to increase profitability and productivity; and improve processes, products & customer service in the department(s)
  • Use data analysis, wisdom, experience, judgment, and past actions as well as input from other sources for decision making, always considering the impact on customers, sales and contribution (profit)
  • Control inventory levels and expenses such as payroll and shrink to impact bottom-line contribution (profit) for the department
  • Ability to multi-task and react to a variety of situations at one time
  • Practice proper ordering techniques to complete orders by deadlines and participate in inventory process to ensure items are available to support merchandising programs and product promotions
  • Exhibit merchandising skills by attractively displaying products considering seasonality, cross-merchandising opportunities and corporate programs with the aim of educating and enticing customers
  • Assist with meal preparation and planning by providing customers with proper serving guidelines and recommending correct cooking techniques, helping to make great meals easy

  • Managerial/ supervisory experience
  • Working knowledge of a variety of cheeses and the cheese industry
  • Knowledge of and passion for cheese, beverages and pairings
Work environment:
  • Work involves continuous interaction with customers and co-workers in a fast-paced environment
  • Typical motions include repetitive hand and arm movements, bending and reaching
  • Responsible for moving and lifting an average of 5 – 15 pounds with a maximum weight lifted of greater than 50 pounds occasionally
  • May be exposed to various allergens and environments, including cold temperatures
  • Work includes the safe and proper handling of knives and other cheese cutting equipment
  • Will be required to spend the majority of time on his or her feet and stand or walk without a break for up to  4 hours
