Job Description

What is my job: Category Merchants possess an understanding of our diverse customer base, their changing purchasing habits and how these factors impact their category purchases. In this role, Merchants utilize this knowledge to develop and execute innovative, strategic plans designed to excite our guests, meet their needs and profitably grow sales. As you build relationships and work closely with business partners, both inside and outside of Wegmans, you will optimize product assortment, service and merchandising plans to meet the needs of our guests and our business.


How do I make a difference?


Providing Incredible, Knowledge Based Service

• Possess a broad understanding of categories and why the category exists, as well as how it meets guests needs; collaborate across categories to formulate plans that are focused on the guest and their buying behaviors (varying by region) with financial planning and goals born out of a customer needs focus

• Remain ahead of the changing needs and purchasing habits of our guests by recognizing areas of opportunity and identifying gaps in the category

• Build relationships with product vendors to position Restaurants as first to the market with new offerings; negotiate programs and prices to ensure our guests get the best product at the best price

• Regularly visit and maintain a presence in Restaurants throughout the company to see first-hand what programs work in the category; identify strengths and weaknesses and listen to feedback to improve the business and better serve our guests

• Partner with Director/VP to ensure department structure and roles continue to evolve to service guests and achieve results while creating upward mobility for employees

• Maintain a passion for the offerings to gain a strong familiarity of the category and make better decisions about where and how we grow our business; be sure to adjust strategies as necessary and maintain both a proactive and reactive mindset for the overall success of the category and the business

• Educate guests, employees and business partners about products to create excitement and passion around products and programs; effectively communicate the category plan

• Partner with Director/VP to plan special events, beverage programs, happy hour offerings and seasonal specials across all concepts (including all full service restaurants, Burger Bars and Market Cafes)


Continuously Improving Results


• Act with the Restaurants in mind when creating new recipes and programs so they can be efficiently implemented  and drive results

• Provide the Restaurants with training opportunities and mentoring through grand openings and continue as needed

• Collaborate with Restaurants and divisions to continuously improve customized services and products to meet unique and regional guests needs

• Identify needs (or gaps) and provide subject matter expertise for all training resources including: Job-aids, order and production guides, recipes and program manuals

• Partner closely with both internal and external business partners; (Prepared Foods Buyers, POS, Restaurant Operations, Wine, etc.) utilize and educate these teams to create and execute programs while promoting the enthusiasm needed to meet category goals


Achieving Results


• Create strategic plans to meet key performance indicators, including Wegmans Brand growth, service, sales, gross profit, etc.; be sure to monitor these indicators and seek opportunities for continuous improvement

• Monitor the promotional and pricing strategies of key competitors; use this knowledge to develop business plans that are mutually beneficial to our customers, Wegmans and our suppliers

What skills, learnings, and experiences are required?


• Minimum 3 years management experience in an upscale Restaurant environment

ability to demonstrate successful management of financials (profit & loss)

• Level 1 Certification of Court of Master Sommeliers

• Possess a combination of strong critical, analytical and creative thinking skills; able to distill relevant information with a focus on achieving results

• Ability to comfortably and effectively represent Wegmans to our suppliers at various levels of their organizations, up to and including Vice Presidents/Senior Vice Presidents

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and respond to situations with a sense of urgency and composure

• Proficient in Windows-based software including Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word)

• Actively communicate the company vision and values to all and ensure work is completed in line with the organization's priorities and goals (integrates Who We Are & What We Do)

• Managing change by gaining a commitment to change using patience, two-way communication and developing a clear picture of the future while supporting our people through transitions and deep rooting the change in their areas

• Possess strategic business planning skills seizing opportunities for continuous improvement to shape the future direction of a department; facilitating others through the development of long-term goals; creating competitive and breakthrough strategic plans

• Ability to drive innovation, seizing opportunities to put creative ideas into action. Can look beyond today to inspire and motivate teams to strive for higher standards and lead the innovation process to develop strategies and drive change


What skills, learnings, and experiences are preferred and will set me apart? 


• Business Management, Retail management, Food Marketing, or other merchandising-related degree

• Experience purchasing and negotiating with vendors


Work environment:


• Work includes sitting for prolonged periods, repetitive hand and arm movements, frequent use of the computer, frequent use of the telephone, along with continuous interaction with co-workers in a fast-paced environment. Work also includes standing, walking for prolonged periods of time without a break, repetitive hand and arm movements, bending, reaching, frequent lifting, and occasional heavy lifting, along with continuous interaction with guests and co-workers in a fast-paced environment. Work involves exposure to various work environments, including temperature changes. The average weight range of items lifted is 5–10 pounds with a maximum weight lifted of 50 pounds occasionally.
