Job Description

The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2) is looking for a Software Engineer with a passion for Scala to join our team of world-class researchers and engineers. Together we will grow the company into a long-term player with significant impact in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Vulcan Inc. recently launched AI2 modeled after the successful Allen Institute of Brain Science under the leadership of Dr. Oren Etzioni. AI2 has a startup atmosphere to encourage innovation from below. We are presently using Scala to tie our research into a natural-language question-answering system and to build an open-source AI framework. As a developer at AI2 you will take part in the full development process and have a wide impact in the company.

An ideal candidate will have experience with:

Scala, or deep experience with another Java Virtual Machine (JVM) language
Natural Language Processing (NLP)
the GitHub model of development
handling large amounts of data
the sbt build system
the Unix development environment

In addition, we are looking for people who:

have strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively in a small organization with uncertain direction
value continued learning about software development and AI
understand the importance of a tight-loop for feature development
know the power of automation

Structure of AI2

AI2 will include four key, interlinked elements:

World-class research and development.
Creation of data and resources for the community.
Activities to energize the wider community to foster breakthroughs.
Support for critical but under-explored research elsewhere.

Current and Planned Programs at AI2

Project Ari: an initiative towards building knowledgeable machines, focused on semi-automatic knowledge-based construction, natural language processing, large-scale machine reasoning, and question-answering.
Open-source AI Framework: a project to create a scaffolding for AI by connecting, extending, and streamlining the use of existing and new AI tools.
Community Activities: a student innovators competition, a summer mentoring program for top students, and design workshops for exploring future directions in the field.
Support for External, Critical Research: promoting critical, external research from visionary researchers that AI2 considers central to its mission.

About Vulcan Inc.

Vulcan Materials Company is a producer of construction aggregates, primarily crushed stone, sand and gravel, a producer of asphalt mix and concrete and a producer of cement in Florida. It operates in three segments: Aggregates, Asphalt mix and Concrete, and Cement. In April 2008, it announced that it had completed the divestitures required for Vulcan's acquisition of Florida Rock Industries, Inc., which closed on November 16, 2007. The divestitures were completed in a series of three independent transactions. In a transaction with Martin Marietta Materials, Inc., Vulcan sold four quarries and a greenfield site in Georgia and a quarry in Tennessee. With the Luck Stone Corporation, Vulcan exchanged a former Florida Rock quarry and a sales yard in Virginia for Luck Stone quarries in Elkton and Augusta, Virginia. In a third transaction, Vulcan sold its interests in a quarry in Georgia to The Concrete Company, which had been the joint venture partner with Florida Rock in this operation.
