Vehicle Emissions Compliance Intern

Start Date: September 2019

6 Months, Full-time

The Engineering and environmental office (EEO) is a group with in VWGoA whose prime focus is to ensure that VWGoA and VW Canada fully comply with all past, present and future government regulations. these regulations direct environmental air quality and fuel economy standards for vehicles built for sale within the US and Canadian markets. The intern will support various engineering tasks of the following three groups with in EEO during his 6 month internship: 1. Environmental Compliance Reporting 2. Vehicle On-board diagnostics and 3. In-use emissions testing. the intern will gain an understanding of various compliance reporting requirements of an OEM to the regulatory agencies. the intern will also gain an understanding of Vehicle On-board diagnostics requirements and the coordination efforts required to interface with the various agencies. he will be exposed to the new emission in-use testing programs that are part of OEM's emissions compliance processes.

Job Responsibilities:

* Assist with design and execution activities for the creation of a new compliance reporting tool to enhance the vehicle certification process
* Assist in documenting the design processes of this reporting tool which aims to generate and securely transfer vehicle certification-related data internally and externally to regulatory agencies.
* Assist in analysis of in-use test data - from chassis emissions rolls and specifically, test data from Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS)
* Assist in checking the OBD submission documents and interacting with Engineering Organizations in Germany during reviews
* Potentially create an automated tool to review Production Vehicle Evaluation (PVE) log file results to insure ease of multi-eye reviews
* Gain working experience conduction PVE(j)(1) testing on vehicle to unsure communication requirements described in California Code of Regulations (CCR 1968.2) are met.
* Gain a working knowledge of the role the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) communication forums (SAE J1979/J1699) in developing new Parameter Identification (PID) definitions and implementation to achieve CARB regulation compliance for off-board tool compliance.
* Exposure to the Emissions Parts Warranty Process where definition of parts occurs to insure compliance with Federal and California legislation.
* Assist in meeting preparations, reporting and project management tasks with agencies


* Must be enrolled at a University/College in an engineering discipline (or) Graduation date must be within the last six months

* Familiarity with collecting and analyzing engineering test data.
