Job Description

Job Description:

The co-op role is based within the Process Chemistry department which has overall responsibility for the development of the synthetic route and chemical manufacturing processes for all active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the Vertex product portfolio. The intern will join a group focused on developing continuous chemistry approaches and application of new processing technologies to the manufacture of Vertex APIs. The role will support the development of our continuous chemistry platforms as well as synthesizing target molecules using both batch and continuous chemistry methods. Your job will be to develop a high degree of competency in operating the continuous chemistry equipment, to work semi-independently on specific projects and may include teaching other group members how to perform new functions on the equipment. This is a "hands-on" position that provides an important link in our development of potential new drugs.

Co-op Program: 6 Month Commitment (January - June 2020), Full Time, 40 Hours/Week

Key Responsibilities:

* Collaborate with organic chemists and chemical engineers in the R&D laboratory to identify and develop continuous chemistry approaches to target molecules
* Perform organic synthesis reactions using different types of flow chemistry reactors
* Support the development of bespoke small-scale flow chemistry systems to expedite synthesis of small molecules
* Develop a high degree of competence in the use of continuous chemistry equipment (e.g. plug flow reactors (PFR), continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR), mixed suspension mixed product removal reactors (MSMPR), Micro-reactors)
* Develop an understanding of the scope of continuous unit operations by reading relevant literature
* Conduct analysis of experiments using a variety of analytical techniques (e.g. HPLC, GC, 1H-NMR) and perform analysis of data to interpret experimental outcomes
* Characterize and improve the performance of continuous chemistry reactor systems
* Record experiments and results in laboratory notebooks in enough detail and in a timely fashion
* Write reports and give presentation updates to groups of scientists at Vertex

Qualification:

* Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate majoring in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field as a sophomore or above
* Completed Organic Chemistry I coursework
* Candidate should ideally be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating in Spring 2020
* Minimum of 3.2 GPA
* Legally eligible to work onsite

Preferred Qualifications

* Organic chemistry laboratory experience
* Completed Organic Chemistry II coursework
* Comfortable using a PC computer and proficient in Windows-based operating systems and basic applications; spreadsheets and databases
* Strong mechanical aptitude
