Job Description

The incumbent serves as administrative and clerical support for the Rural Health Resource Center-Western Region (RHRC) providing service to VISNs 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22 for the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) Office of Rural Health. Incumbent executes office automation functions including planning and performing complex duties requiring flexibly, organization and different approaches and methods from one assignment and/or program to another. Manages the administrative property of the organization. Schedules and monitors property management services including maintaining an automated system that track property inventory. Prepares correspondence covering subject of an administrative nature, both internal and external. Creates authorizations, arranging travel itineraries and creating vouchers for repayment of government credit cards. Uses an electronic based calendar system, such as SharePoint, to account for leave, meetings and trainings. Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 8:00am thru 4:30pm

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience include responding, personally, to non-technical, but substantive, requests for information involving agency programs and functions, project assignments, internal procedures and relationships, and current work status. Maintaining calendars for organizational staff and other shared resources, such as conference rooms and training events. Processing incoming and outgoing written communication, performing office automation duties, scheduling and/or coordinating resources in support of mission requirements. Adhering to all organizational and departmental policies, and experience using computer software applications such as MS Office and Excel.

There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary and typically, the employee sits comfortably to do thier work. Some walking, standing, bending, carrying of ligt items such as papers, books, small parts or driving and automobile.

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05 level.

About U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

To be eligibile candidates must: 

  • have graduated with a baccalaureate degree from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). 

  • have successfully passed the NCLEX-RN exam and hold an active, unrestricted license by the start of the program, but have no RN experience. 

  • be able to work full time on day shift with preceptors and mentors.

  • sign a statement of commitment. 

  • have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
