Job Description

*This position is located in Marina del Rey, CA.*

Information Sciences Institute (ISI), part of the Viterbi School of Engineering at USC, seeks a Research Programmer I for a position in Marina del Rey.

*Job Accountabilities:*

Serve as programmer or technical specialist on a research project(s). Develop or modify software projects. Establish project plans and schedule and monitor progress, providing status reports as required. Utilize creativity and innovation to solve conceptual programming problems raised by cutting edge research. Participate in research projects. Contribute to research designs. Develop prototype implementations, and participate in the preparation of papers describing the research. Oversee the design, coding, testing, debugging and documentation activities of project staff. Interface with researchers to identify and determine requirements. Conduct detailed systems analysis to define system scope, objectives and implementation approach. Develop system definition, architecture and detailed needs analysis including hardware and software recommendations. Propose alternative approaches and conduct evaluation and comparison. Collaborate with colleagues on research ideas and solutions. Work with staff and/or students providing guidance in system design and implementation. Suggest new avenues for research. Recognize opportunities to adapt results for novel applications. Contribute text to project reports and technical papers. Take primary responsibility for system demonstrations (preparation, setup, and delivery) at conferences and funder events. Make technical presentations and demonstrations at conferences and/or meetings. Stay informed of new developments and technologies by reading journals and other pertinent publications. Maintain contact with vendors. Provide advice on selection of appropriate computer hardware and software.

*Job Requirements:*

1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related major

2. One (1) year of experience as a SW Engineer/Developer, Program Manager, Programmer Analyst, or in positions performing related job duties at an entry level or above

*Desired Job Qualifications:*

1. Knowledge of programming and analysis

2. Proficiency in solving conceptual programming problems with creativity and innovation

3. Experience with Java, JavaScript, Python programming

4. Experience with relational databases, SQL, ETL and data integration techniques

5. Experience with web technologies, graphical user interface frameworks, web services, and security methods

6. Ability to work on mixed Unix, Linus, MacOS, Windows and virtual machine environments

7. Knowledge of information retrieval, search and ranking techniques

8. Knowledge of machine learning and data mining algorithms, including supervised and unsupervised methods, clustering, group and outlier detection, graph data mining, network inference, entity recognition and fact extraction from text

9. Knowledge of Big Data processing techniques, such as Hadoop, Hive, and Spark
