Job Description

SCEC Software Engineer (USC Job ID 165347: Research Programmer II)

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is located in the heart of downtown L.A. and is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world-class research university and a member of the "Trojan Family," which is comprised of the faculty, students and staff that make the university what it is.

SCEC seeks a talented software developer to write scientific software, integrate complex software systems, and run large-scale simulations as part of our earthquake system science research program. This person will collaborate with SCEC scientists to develop, operate, enhance, and maintain scientific software used in SCEC's computational research program that involves high-performance computing, distributed computing, large-scale data management, and scientific visualizations using a variety of computing platforms and multiple computing languages. The selected research software developer:

* Will have significant experience developing software for Linux systems in two, or more, computing languages including Python, C, Java, C++, and FORTRAN.
* Will have experience operating, modifying, debugging, and optimizing large complex codebases.
* Will have experience using software engineering tools including integrated development environment tools, software version control, automated software testing techniques, and agile software development processes.
* Will have a broad range of software knowledge including familiarity with distributed computing technologies, scientific workflow tools, data management technologies, relational database programming, and open-source software development practices.
* Will have experience with system administration and software configuration of Linux operating systems including command line utilities, package management, virtualization technologies, system security, data transfer optimization, job schedulers, and data storage and management.
* Will be able to collaborate effectively with scientists involved in research, helping them design and implement complex systems and applications that make use of parallel scientific software, high performance computing, and high throughput computing.
* Will be able to work independently with minimal direction and have excellent verbal and written communications skills in order to coordinate with researchers and computer scientists.
* Will be effective in evaluating assignments and accurately estimating the difficulty level and time required for completion.
* Will complete and implement solutions that meet customer requirements, and demonstrate a sense of urgency, drive and energy while pursuing his/her work.

This is a full-time USC staff position with excellent University benefits. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

This is a contract or grant funded position.

Minimum Education: Master's degree, Combined work experience and education as equivalent

Minimum Experience: 3 years

Minimum Field of Expertise: Relevant work experience to provide strong technical knowledge of programming and analysis as well as senior or lead experience. Demonstrated ability to stand in for researchers as circumstances require. Demonstrated creativity and innovation in solving conceptual programming problems.

Preferred Experience: 5 years
