Nursing support staff give personal care to patients with an emphasis on dignity and respect, striving to make each patient feel as comfortable as possible during their hospital stay.

Nursing support staff also provide invaluable aid to nurses and doctors on the floor by completing important skilled tasks such as checking vital signs and glucose levels, performing EKGs and blood draws, and much more.

UPMC Jameson is hiring full time Nursing Assistants/Patient Care Technicians to support various medical surgical units; patient care staff at UPMC Jameson work on a rotating schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage. Availability for all shifts, including some weekends and holidays, is expected.

The Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technicians are valued steps in the UPMC nursing support career ladder, with opportunities for upward advancement into lead and management roles. Many support staff may seek to use the knowledge and skill they gain in this position to launch a career in nursing, advanced practice, health care administration, therapy, or another related field.

Candidates will be considered for the Nursing Assistant or Patient Care Technician role according to their qualifications. The Nursing Assistant pay rate is $12.76 and the Patient Care Technician pay rate is $13.11.


* Performs basic clinical skills such as taking blood pressures, pulses, and respirations; weighing patients; and testing blood sugars by finger stick.
* Walks patients in the room, to the bathroom, and in the hallway.
* Helps patients to walk with canes, walkers, and crutches.
* Transports patients (by pushing them in wheelchairs or on carts) to and from tests and other units.
* Re-positions patients in bed, assists patients in and out of beds, bedside chairs, and wheelchairs, as well as on and off patient carriers (with assistance as needed).
* Bathes/showers patients, cleans soiled patients and beds, empties urine collection bags and measures urine, empties and measures fluid from drains.
* Prepares patients for meals, feeds patients, fills water pitchers, restocks supplies, and prepares rooms for new admissions.
* Assists with post-life physical care.
* Depending upon the role, a PCT may also perform several advanced skills such as drawing blood, performing EKGs (heart monitor tracings), changing simple wound dressings, removing bladder catheters, and removing IV catheters from veins.
* Some units may require clerical and telephone work.

Performs other duties as assigned.


* High school diploma or equivalent.

* If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant training program.

* Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

* CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
* Act 34 Criminal Clearance
* Some units may require Act 33 and Act 73 Clearances
