Job Description

The School of Architecture and Planning is seeking applications for a Professional Intern to provide support in the Fabrication Lab. The Professional Intern will report directly to the Technical Lab Coordinator. The Fabrication Lab is a critical component of the teaching and research missions of the three academic programs within the School of Architecture and Planning: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Community & Regional Planning. The School of Architecture and Planning is housed in George Pearl Hall, designed by renowned architect, Antoine Predock, and is located on UNM's main campus.

Under the direct supervision and mentorship of the Technical Lab Coordinator, the Professional Intern will be involved in a wide range of projects with varying levels of complexity. Primarily, the Professional Intern will assist the Technical Lab Coordinator and will have oversight of the Fabrication Lab during evening and weekend hours of operation. The job responsibilities will include: providing technical guidance and support to student and faculty users; operating digital and analogue machines, tools, and software including laser cutters, CNC routers, table saws and other shop tools; conducting workshops to train student and faculty users; implementing safety policies and procedures; maintaining equipment and tools; cleaning the Lab; and assisting with building and/or furnishings maintenance and repair.

The Professional Intern will also monitor the work of student employees and will supervise various shifts of the Fabrication Lab operating hours. This is a full-time, one-year term appointment, renewable depending upon available funding and organizational need, with the possibility of reclassification to a staff position after 2 years of continuous employment. This is a developmental, fixed term (typically 1-2 years) career-path position that is restricted to graduates of accredited university Bachelors or Masters programs who have obtained their degrees no earlier than 24 months prior to the date of hire.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree; no previous work experience required.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications Undergraduate or Graduate Degree in Architecture or related field from a professionally accredited program.

Broad experience using analogue, laser and digital fabrication tools.

Knowledge of modeling and graphic design software programs.

Experience and capability using heavy machinery and shop tools.

Previous experience working in a fabrication lab.
