Job Description

UNM Financial Services Division is looking for a Data Scientist who will support our offices with insights gained from analyzing our institutional data. The ideal candidate is adept at using structured and unstructured data sets to find opportunities for process optimization and using models to test the effectiveness of different courses of action. They must have strong experience using a variety of data mining/data analysis methods, using a variety of data tools, building and deploying models. The right candidate will have a passion and proven ability discovering hidden insights in data sets and working a wide range of stakeholders, business analysts, and functional teams to improve business outcomes.

Duties & Responsibilities

* Analyze University spend data for hidden insights, better contract negotiation and/or identify hard dollar savings opportunities.
* Classify spend data using machine learning models or similar techniques. Build, train, test and deploy the model and monitor for performance.
* Clustering financial and PCard transactions by different criteria for potential anomalies and/or compliance risks.
* Mining research and procurement contracts (textual pdf) for compliance risk and identifying non-compliant transactions.
* Work with process owners and SMEs to identify opportunities for leveraging data to drive process efficiencies and improve compliance.
* Mining PCard transactions for compliance with University policies and alert stakeholders of possible fraudulent transactions.
* Coordinate with different functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes.
* Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy.
* Visualize and report the data findings and conclusions to leadership utilizing various visual formats - D3, ggplot, Tableau etc.

Conditions of Employment Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

* 3+ years of coding experience using statistical computer languages (R, Python, etc.) to manipulate data and draw insights.
* Ability to understand business needs and apply data science, machine learning, and predictive analytics to meet those needs.
* Data engineering experience, including SQL and manipulating structured or unstructured datasets for analysis.
* A drive to pick up new technologies, frameworks, and business domains
* Knowledge/experience with statistical and/or machine learning modeling techniques (regression, decision trees, random forest, clustering, text mining, NLP etc.) and their real-world advantages/drawbacks.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordinating across teams.
* Knowledge/experience with Data Science/AI platforms such as Rapid Miner, Azure etc.
* Leveraging web services APIs for integrating with ERP systems
