ROLE of the POSITION

The Business Development Advisor reports directly to the Interim Project Manager of the Nevada Small Business Development Center (NSBDC) at UNLV. This position is intended to assist a multi-faceted program in the outlying areas of Southern Nevada, including but not limited to Las Vegas and Henderson Major functions include providing comprehensive business assistance to area small businesses which are in the start-up, operating, and/or expansion phases. This position will assist clients with counseling, education, and development and will work in tandem with the Office of Economic Development Office capitalizing on the existing resources and partnerships while continuously seeking new resources and partnerships.

These individuals work to cultivate business contacts through involvement in public relations activities involving area organizations (i.e. business councils, development districts, development authorities, and other economic development organizations, chambers of commerce, and various industry specific associations, etc.), the business community leaders, state and local elected officials and other key government representatives, community college and university related boards/committees, and alumni under the direction of the Interim Project Manager who may restrict access to certain political or governmental entities as appropriate. This position is responsible for specific client outcomes as designated annually by the Small Business Administration. These outcomes are part of a statewide mandate of business starts, long-term clients, and economic impact.

Knowledge of:

* Government agencies - specifically educational institutions and development authorities
* Non-profit and service groups and business organizations in region.
* Banking with both consumer and commercial lending exposure, real estate lending/underwriting
* Business budgeting, funding, forecasting, and taxation processes
* Client development, business plan development, funding development, and program development
* Economic development policies, goals and objectives for state and local entities, must know and be capable of working with all agencies active in business development

Skills:

* Excellent verbal and written communication including well-developed presentation skills
* Excellent public relation skills
* Excellent interpersonal people skills with the ability to work with academics, business professionals/ executives, business owners, and government officials - both state and local levels elected and appointed
* Proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and email), specifically word processing, spreadsheet development, database management, networks, e-commerce, and Internet site development
* Higher education teaching, workshop, and training program development, and facilitation
* Bilingual (English-Spanish) skills preferred, if applicable, candidates should note skills on application materials

Ability to:

* Work and interact with various authority levels and diverse populations
* Develop and implement strategies for increasing the amount of profitable entrepreneurial initiatives in Southern Nevada.
* Plan and deliver impactful training workshops that help small business owners succeed in gaining additional customers and utilize resources effectively.
* Develop, track and report performance of counseling efforts in NeoSerra (client tracking software system).
* Establish key contacts and coordinate mutually beneficial activities for these entities
* Think creatively - to conceptualize for the big picture
* Write, analyze and evaluate grants and proposals
* Establish and administrate a key volunteer base, which includes members of the business community and retired executives through the SCORE program
* Develop credibility, establish rapport, and formulate partnerships with diverse populations that result in collaborative efforts, and sustain effective cooperative working relationships
* Travel as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Bachelor's degree (business or similar degree preferred) from a regionally accredited college or university OR a minimum of 5 years of comparable related professional experience. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.

SALARY RANGE

Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. Position is contingent upon funding.
