Job Summary

The School of Education anticipates receiving a contract from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics to edit the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education. This is the most prestigious journal in the field of mathematics education. Professor Patricio Herbst has been designated incoming Editor in Chief for the journal, an appointment that runs from June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2024. An assistant editor is needed to act as the managing editor and staff coordinator. The successfully hired person will manage timeliness in the processing of manuscripts and support the work of the Editor in Chief, two associate editors, the editor of a Research Commentary section, and occasional guest editors.

It is anticipated that the position will require an effort of 60% during 2019-2020, 100% between 2020-2023, and 40% during 2023-2024. During the 2019-2020 year, the work required will include intake and review, adding elements of production in the 2020-2021 year.


* Handle all Journal for Research in Mathematics Education email correspondence and inquiries, forwarding some to the Editor in Chief
* Check initial Quality Control and fix blinding for submitted manuscripts
* Fill in Initial Read form to assist associate editors in finding reviewers.
* Help generate lists of potential reviewers for manuscripts
* Check potential reviewers for reviewing history and Conflicts Of Interest, and send email invitations to selected reviewers
* Assign reviewers to manuscripts and send invitation emails. Create accounts for new reviewers.
* Summarize reviewer comments for manuscripts that have completed peer review
* Review and edit correspondence with authors (mostly the Editor in Chief's decision letters)
* Work with guest editors (generating initial list of potential reviewers, assigning and inviting reviewers, analyze/summarize reviews, edit and send decision letters)
* Assist the research commentary section editor (similar to process with guest editors)
* Copyedit accepted manuscripts for grammar, American Psychological Association style, content, and reference and quote checking
* Communicate with authors of accepted manuscripts about needed revisions (based on our editing) until manuscript is ready for publication
* Work with authors to generate art files suitable (e.g., high enough resolution) for printing
* Prepare manuscripts (final review, final formatting, generating versions of the manuscript with figures/tables in the body and at the end) to send to National Council of Teachers of Mathematics for layout
* Coordinate page proof corrections with authors and generate combined author/editorial team corrections to send to National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (first round of page proofs)
* Review and correct page proofs (first and second rounds of page proofs)
* Coordinate with senior copy editor at National Council of Teachers of Mathematics regarding the production from layout to publication in the system pending and deadlines for handling them; and delegate tasks/send reminders to rest of team
* Keep track of all submissions
* Maintain manuscript tracking spreadsheet for purposes of generating panel meeting report
* Prepare annual reports and slide presentations of Journal for Research in Mathematics Education submission statistics and other data
* Prepare stats and figures for panel meeting report (Victoria and I handle different parts of the report)
* Provide operational information (reviewer statistics, potential candidates for editorial panel or international advisory board members, etc.) in response to requests from the editor, the panel, or the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Staff Liaison
* Travel occasionally for Editorial Panel meetings and journal presentations.
* Attend panel meetings as support staff for editor

Required Qualifications*

* Bachelor's degree in social sciences or humanities
* Excellent references
* Demonstrated experience as an editor
* Expert and exquisite command of the English language
* Capacity for managing processes and people using technology, excellent relational skills, adapted to work with academics, and verifiable excellence in work ethics, initiative, self-monitoring, etc.

Desired Qualifications*

* Working knowledge of American Psychological Association style is preferred, otherwise, the chosen individual will need to learn this in a very short time. Knowledge of the field of mathematics education is desirable.

Work Locations

The selected candidate will report to an office in the Schoo of Education building in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
