Job Description

The Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) at the University of Kansas seeks a Research Engineer to work with faculty, staff, and students to perform research on airborne sensor systems for science applications in the cryosphere. The person in this position will be responsible for collaborating with engineering faculty, staff and students to develop and integrate airborne sensors and other sensor technologies for remote sensing applications. This person will also contribute to the design and implementation of new and unique microwave, radio frequency, and other prototype hardware systems. Participation in field deployments (both airborne and in-situ) to Polar Regions for durations of up to two months two times per year is required.

Job Description

* 15% - Work with faculty, other engineering staff, and students to design, prototype, and evaluate advanced radar remote sensing systems, including: the design, debugging, testing, and integration of analog, high-speed digital, and power circuits; investigation of the usage of the latest components and technologies; and the use of software tools and test equipment to formulate and test electronic designs;
* 15% - Maintain and prepare radar equipment for field deployment and participate in off-site equipment installation and test flight activities;
* 40% - Support and participate in field experiments conducted in locations including Alaska, Greenland and Antarctica, as needed;
* 20% - Complete documentation of designs and installations; product layouts, detailed drawings and schematics; and communicate project progress and accomplishments as technical reports and presentations;
* 10% - Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field and 3 years of related experience OR a Master's degree;
* Three or more years of experience with microwave, radio frequency, or high-speed digital system printed board design and layout;
* Experience with test equipment and software tools for electronics design, testing and documentation evidenced in work history or course work;
* Strong written communication skills, based on application materials and/or work history;
* Willingness and capability to participate in field deployments (both airborne and in-situ) to Polar Regions for durations of up to two months two times per year.

Preferred Qualifications

* M.S degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university by time of hire.
* 5 or more years of experience with microwave, radio frequency, or high-speed digital system printed board design and layout.
* Research experience in a university setting.
* Previous work experience in Polar Regions
