Location: The Signal Center - UI Health Ventures - Wells Fargo Building

City: Coralville, IA

Status: Full-Time


BS or BA degree in computer science or a related major, and 2+ years of professional software development experience. Experience initiating and working on original projects. Full-stack web development experience writing and shipping code in a modern web application framework (e.g., Django, Rails). Ability to effectively communicate and work with a wide variety of professions and disciplines including healthcare professionals and professors in the Department of Computer Science. Experience executing all phases of the software development lifecycle. Proficiency using the command-line in a *nix environment. Good communication skills and the ability to work both independently and with a team is critical as is the ability to confront ambiguity and complex problems.

Experience with mobile app development, Django, leading projects, and working on health-care oriented projects in a research-oriented environment are all a plus. Candidates must provide examples of prior work/code (e.g., a link to a personal GitHub account).

Job Duties:

This position is a unique opportunity to work in a start-up-like multidisciplinary group involving collaborators from the College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, the Department of Computer Science (in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences), and The Signal Center.

Group projects will revolve around novel, mobile health and e-health interventions designed to improve patient care. Many of these interventions and projects involve designing, implementing, testing, and evaluating new technology-based approaches to monitoring patients in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospital and home-based settings.

This position will involve leading (along with the lab manager) development efforts and managing projects that will ultimately scale and support large populations. Responsibilities include participation in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including (but not limited to): performing code reviews, ensuring coding standards and style guides are adhered to, requirements gathering and analysis, design, testing, deployment, and continuously improving the software development process. This position also requires the individual to serve as a mentor for new employees, interns, trainees, and student workers.
