The Barbara Davis Center has an opening for a full-timeProfessional Research Assistant position. This position will be assisting theASK Screening Team Leads and ASK Program Manager with the implementation ofthis large-scale community screening program, which will include being deployedthroughout the Colorado area in clinics, hospitals, the BDC, and screeningsites (e.g., health fairs, schools), to see if parents and their childrenbetween the ages of 1-17 are interested in being screened for Type 1 Diabetes(T1D) and Celiac Disease (CD). For those who are interested in participating,the screener would explain the study, administer informed consent, and collectdemographic information and blood sample. Responsibilities will also includefollow-up tasks associated with screening recruitment, data collection, andworking with screening partners.

Job Summary:

This is a part-time or full-time PRA position for a Screenerfor the Autoimmunity Screening for Kids (ASK) Program at the Barbara DavisCenter for Diabetes (BDC). This is a jointly funded research project from theJuvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the Helmsley Charitable Trust(HCT), and the Janssen Foundation to continue a large-scale screening inchildren 1-17 over the next two years who live in Colorado. The study aims toidentify those at risk for two childhood autoimmune diseases--Type 1 Diabetes(T1D) and Celiac Disease (CD) and to follow with an education and monitoringintervention with the goal of preventing acute and long-term complicationsassociated with the diagnosis. Inaddition, the study has launched a metro-wide community awareness campaign toengage and recruit the public for participation. A primarily study objective is to develop,beta-test, and revise a multi-prong screening approach tailored to pediatricpractices, Colorado Children's Hospital Network of Care, federally qualifiedhealth centers (FQHCs), schools, community centers or micro-clinics. Goal:screen 50,000 children during the next three-year period.

Supervision Received:

This position reports to the ASK Program Manager (CristyGeno, MPH, Ph.D.) and ASK Screening Team Leads. This position will also workclosely with the larger ASK team, including ASK Principal Investigator (MarianRewers, MD, Ph.D.), Sr. Investigator (Judith Baxter, MA), Follow-UpCoordinators, Clinical, Lab and Data Management Teams. Supervision will includetraining and oversight for the position's responsibilities. The position ispart of a larger study team that includes other related studies and will beexpected to participate as part of this team.

Job Responsibilities:

* Recruit and screen study participants from local clinics, hospitals, the BDC, and screening sites and events, this includes working with parents and children in a wide age range in a variety of care settings.


* Conduct allaspects of data collection according to a standardized protocol from thoseagreeing to participate including:administeringinformed consent, collectingdemographic information, collecting bloodrequired a blood sample


* Assist withassociated screening activities at clinics, hospitals, and screening sitesincluding supply inventory, study participant communications (contactparticipating families), data entry of screening forms and on medical recordssystem if applicable, and serve as liaisons between screening site staff andthe study.


* Coordinate bloodsample pickup and transportation schedule with clinics, hospitals, BDC, andStudy Lab.


* Assist with thepaperwork processing, filing, and preparation of presentations as needed.


* Other screeningassociated tasks that emerge.



This position generally works Monday-Friday, with weekendwork required on an occasional basis to comprise a 20-40 hour workweek. Hourswill be variable, and the position must be flexible to meet the scheduling andcoverage needs of the study. Must have reliable transportation to get toscreening sites and locations across Colorado (mainly within the Denver Metroarea with occasional trips to other Colorado cities and/or rural areas). Theposition work area will be with the main study team at the Barbara Davis Centeras well as Denver metro area clinics, hospitals, and other screening sites.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established at$36,000-38,000 (full time FTE) and is commensurate with skills and experience.Information on University benefits programs, including eligibility, is locatedat Employee Services.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

* Bachelors of Arts or Sciences with a background in Biology or a health-related field preferred.


* Work experience that can be substituted on a year for year basis.


* One year paid work experience required, with experience in medical research or clinical setting preferred.


* Good interpersonal and communication skills required.



Preferred Qualifications:

* Spanish reading, writing, and speaking fluency strongly preferred.


* Customer Service or sales experience strongly preferred.


* Experience in research or recruiting participants for research studies.


* Experience working with physicians and nurses is desirable.


* Certified phlebotomist or phlebotomy experience preferred.
