The College of Medicine, Department of Molecular Genetics is looking for a Student Worker. This position will support the University's mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff and all our activities.
Job Summary/Duties: This job requires the ability to organize one's own time with supervision.
(I) Assist in the performance of experiments as needed. Training will be provided
These experiments may include, but are not limited to: 1) Assist in cell/virus culture (maintain cell lines and expand as needed, produce and quantify viral stocks, plaque assays, etc.). 2) Molecular genetics (prepare plasmid stocks, generate and analyze clones, Southern blots, Northern blots, Western blots, PCR, Quantitative PCR, RT PCR, DNA sequencing, in vitro transcription, preparation of radiolabeled probes [RNA and DNA], in vitro translation, produce and purify protein, etc.) 3) Assist with other experiments as deemed necessary.
(II) General laboratory maintenance: 1) Maintain equipment and laboratories in good working order (includes clean up duties). 2) Prepare laboratory reagents and stock solutions. 3) Inventory supplies and equipment and note what needs to be ordered. 4) Perform duties in accordance with radiation safety and OSHA requirements. 5) Maintain and catalog laboratory stocks of clones, viruses, cell lines etc. Many of these tasks require routine computer skills.
Minimum Qualifications: At minimum 16 years of age; Enrolled at a post-secondary institution or a secondary school; Appointed as a Co-Op Student, Student Worker, or Work Study Student; Enrolled at least part-time (one or more credit hours if at a post-secondary institution), with the exception of summer term, or will be a registered student during the next academic term.
"Enrollment" shall include: The period between two successive terms for which the student is enrolled. The one "off" term in each academic year in which the student is not enrolled. Student employee status may be maintained for one additional term following graduation or withdraw from enrollment.
