Advancement Marketing Communications

The Development and Alumni Relations Advancement Marketing Communications group is a full-service strategic marketing team, providing promotional, editorial, design, web, e-communications, social media, and constituent and donor relations services to support the entire spectrum of the fundraising enterprise at Berkeley. We offer direct services as well as consultation.

What We Do

Showcase the excellence and impacts of the University and connect our audiences to Berkeley in ways that inspire pride and philanthropic action. We create, support, and grow a variety of print and digital publications, including The Promise of Berkeley magazine (90,000+ recipients), the Berkeley Online e-newsletter (300,000+ recipients), and Cal Facts. We provide marketing communications leadership and expertise to such initiatives and events as the Big Give and Parents &
Reunion Weekend at Homecoming.

Promote campus fundraising priorities. We accomplish this across platforms in a variety of ways, including the campuswide give.berkeley.edu online giving site, case statements, proposals, and white papers.

Demonstrate the role and importance of philanthropic support to the University. We communicate this to our audiences through engaging materials, presentations, publications, websites, and social media.

Recognize and thank donors and report on the impact of their philanthropy. We write, edit, design, and produce such vehicles as the Annual Report of Philanthropy and provide editorial, design, and production support to direct mail efforts.

Provide fundraisers and volunteer leaders with tools for donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. This includes consultation on a broad range of marketing communications strategies and delivering such items as fact sheets, toolkits, speeches, and talking points.


The Web Application Programmer is a primary programmatic and production lead for the team-based interactive media team at Development and Alumni Relations (DAR). This involves a full range of online media to advance the goals of DAR and campus-wide development partners. This includes such media as web sites, database applications, online giving services, content management systems, e-mail, e-newsletters, and electronic solicitations.

The Web Application Programmer writes web-based programs in various programming languages, including but not limited to: PHP, JavaScript, and PERL. Experience with ColdFusion, and ASP a plus. Designs relational databases and supports backend of web interfaces and media rich interfaces. Develops and maintains content management systems including open source and custom built systems. Designs, develops, modifies, tests and evaluates and maintains computer programs. Includes test-to-production processes, quality assurance, maintenance and documentation of applications.

This position is the principal producer of web applications, web sites, data management systems, and database-driven content management systems for Marketing Communications, Annual Giving, Gift Planning, External Relations, and Donor Stewardship, as well as support for the schools, colleges and campus funding units. This includes public facing web sites such as Give to Berkeley and the @Cal Alumni Network, the Campaign web site, and internal web assets such as the Big Give. May also consult on the development of other campus websites and perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities include:

50% Web application development and database design
20% Technology consultant and analyst
20% Web updates, troubleshooting and maintenance
10% Web documentation, client training and support

Required Qualifications

- Highly skilled in PHP and JavaScript. Familiarity with PHP frameworks (such as Symfony). Coldfusion and ASP experience a plus.
- Expert knowledge of HTML, CSS, and SQL databases (table-less layout)
- Ability to implement web-based search, retrieval, and update for a large or relational database and create programs that display HTML pages using database retrieval results.
- Ability to write programs to generate queries from a web-based forms and also work as the principal support person in Marketing Communications for communicating with the alumni database team on web/database connectivity issues, including web services.
- Thorough knowledge of web applications programming function.
- Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation in PHP, ColdFusion, ASP.NET, JSON, JavaScript in addition to MySQL, SQL, and Oracle databases.
- Interpersonal; skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
- Experience working in a collaborative, team environment.
- Ability to learn new technologies.
- Ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
- Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
- Ability to understand business needs and how business systems can support those needs.
- Must be self-motivated, work independently or as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem-solving skills.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

Salary & Benefits
