Departmental Overview

The College of Letters & Science (L&S) is the largest of the colleges on the Berkeley campus. The College is composed of five divisions, 41 academic departments and a variety of other research and academic units. There are +700 FTE faculty, over 20,000 undergraduate and graduate majors, and approximately 1,000 total headcount non-academic staff. The College is supported by a General Fund budget of $210 million; annual expenditures, including restricted funds, exceed $470 million. LSIT is currently seeking an Applications Programmer. This is a two-year contract position with full benefits.


LSIT provides web support services to L&S as well as several other campus units. We currently assist with the hosting and maintenance of over 200 different sites on two external hosts and a number of local department servers. We also provide a limited amount of Linux server and desktop support. We run a lean team, and place a premium on staff who are able to wear multiple hats, learn on the fly, and provide excellent customer service.

Our vision for this position is to increase the technical capability of our team by adding someone with skills that will enable us to assist departments with building and maintaining websites, managing and configuring common CMS software including Drupal and WordPress and associated modules, themes, web security, web hosting platforms, servers, server file systems, Linux maintenance, scripting for automation, backup, and other tasks.

This position is expected to provide technical leadership both in LSIT and across L&S and will help drive strategic decisions regarding the services LSIT provides.


- Designs, develops, modifies, tests/debugs and analyzes application code that addresses various business requirements for functional areas by applying professional application programming concepts. Creates code that is neat, readable, commented, and maintainable.
- Under general supervision, analyzes existing programs or works to formulate logic for moderately complex new systems, devises logic procedures, reads/prepares flowcharting, performs coding, data analysis, and tests/debugs programs.
- Performs data analysis, designs and documents effective data models, uses relational and non-relational databases and structured query language dialects.
- Performs routine and as-needed maintenance on servers, websites, and databases. Follows change management protocols and provides timely and effective communication.
- Monitors ticket queues, security notices, and configures monitoring software alerts to proactively mitigate situations that would cause downtime or degradation.
- Develops and executes manual and automated test plans.
- Develops detailed conversion, migration, and implementation plans.
- Conducts interviews and gathers and analyzes data to prepare requirements and programming documentation.
- Assists with implementation of changes in development, maintenance and system standards. Convenes meetings with other developers in the College for collaboration and presents best practices.

Required Qualifications

- Experience building and maintaining Drupal and WordPress sites.
- Must be familiar with web applications, web programming languages and object oriented programming concepts.
- Experience with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, PHP
- Experience with Linux operating systems including common installation and configuration tasks, security hardening, networking, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with MySQL
- Experience with assessing and mitigating website, database, and platform security.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, customer service skills, and ability to collaborate well with others.
- Must be able to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
- Must be self-motivated, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines, and demonstrate problem solving skills.
- This position is subject to a background check.

- Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience working in IT within a higher education academic environment.
- Experience with Symfony and writing business applications using it.
- Experience with C#.
- Experience with commercial hosting platforms and automation of repetitive tasks.
- Experience with MS SQL, FileMaker Pro, and no-SQL databases like MongoDB.
- Experience using and deploying content with SharePoint 2013.
- Experience building and maintaining iOS and Android applications and websites that target mobile devices.

Salary & Benefits

$47,600 - $72,900 Annually, commensurate with experience.
