Departmental Overview

This position is within the Endpoint Engineering and Infrastructure (EEI) group in Information Services and Technology (IST). One of EEI's major initiatives is The Berkeley Desktop, which provides a reliable, secure, and integrated administrative computing environment that reduces the amount of time faculty and staff spend maintaining their computers. A standard environment combined with automated maintenance means campus sees fewer problems and is able to get help faster. For more information, please see: https://desktop.berkeley.edu/ Currently, EEI manages more than 10,000 machines.

Responsibilities

For a System Administrator 2:
- Applies professional concepts to implement network communications and solutions.
- Under general supervision, implements system enhancements (software and hardware updates) that will improve the performance and reliability of the system.
- Under general supervision, manages centralized computer servers.
- Analyzes, installs, modifies and supports operating systems, databases, utilities and Internet/intranet-related tools.
- Applies professional concepts to conduct systems programming and systems support activities.
- Operates campus' internal data communications systems, including LANs and WANs.
- Under general supervision, implements networked systems.
- Assists with execution of security control to prevent hackers from infiltrating campus information.
- Assists with maintenance of security systems for routers and switches.
- Applies professional concepts to administer security policies to control access to systems.

For a System Administrator 3:
- Defines, designs and implements systems management solutions.
- Proposes and implements system enhancements (software and hardware updates) that will improve the performance and reliability of the system.
- Manages centralized computer servers and services with a campus-wide scope
- Performs complex analysis to acquire, install, configure, secure, and support operating systems, databases, utilities and Internet/intranet-related tools.
- Performs complex systems programming and systems support activities.
- Conducts programming tasks.
- Operates campus' complex internal data communications systems, including LANs and WANs.
- Plans, designs and implements networked systems.
- Performs complex security control activities to prevent hackers from infiltrating campus information.
- Maintains complex security systems for routers and switches.

Required Qualifications

For a System Administrator 2:
- Must be able to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner, both in writing and verbally.
- Must have basic knowledge of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance.
- Basic knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
- Requires knowledge of other areas of IT.
- Strongly prefer experience with systems automation, scripting languages, or programming languages
- Prefer experience with multiple platforms and operating systems
- Must be able to learn significant amounts of new technical material through self study and online training
- After receiving technical direction, must be able to work unsupervised for significant periods of time
- Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

For a System Administrator 3:
- Must be able to both work in a team and work autonomously to complete medium to large projects.
- Must be able to problem solve in a complex environment across multiple organizations that is highly decentralized and highly distributed.
- Must have good communication skills with the ability to describe complex technical topics in non-technical language
- Must be able to navigate organizational boundaries and constraints and have good negotiation skills to be productive when working with multiple teams and organizations simultaneously.
- Must have worked on system management projects with more than 100 machines. More than a 1000 machines is a plus.
- Must have experience in a common scripting language such as PowerShell, Python, or BASH or experience with a common programming language such as Java. Publicly available source code is a plus.
- Experience with managing more than one operating system (Windows, OS X, Linux) is a plus.
- Experience with IBM Endpoint Manager, JAMF Casper, Bomgar, or other system management tool is a plus.
- Experience overseeing Active Directory Domains over multiple OUs and sites, including users, groups and objects, group policies, logon/logoff scripts, remote administration.
- Experience mitigating security issues that impact workstations, servers, and networks to determine threat levels, risks, and solutions.
- Must be able to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner among varying levels in the organization.
- Has thorough knowledge, skills and abilities associated with identifying systems-related issues and actions needed to improve or correct system or application performance.
- Has knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
- Has skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs.
- Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

This position is posted as a System Administrator 2 or System Administrator 3. The department decides it can fill the position at either level, depending on the level of skills of the candidates that apply.
