Access Control Mechanic

Position Information

The Access Control Mechanic performs journey level access control and locksmith services throughout the UCR campus to ensure the safety and security of the campus community. Installs, programs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains a variety of networked access systems and stand-alone access systems. Creates and maintains multi-level master key systems, cuts and issues keys, maintains accurate key holder records; re-keys as locks as needed, cuts and re-issues necessary keys. Installs, repairs and replaces building, door and mechanical hardware. Installs, modifies, troubleshoots and maintains surveillance equipment; maintains and monitors related surveillance systems. Provides other security and access control support, including parking lot access, safe access, and access procedures for operational closures. Responsible for responding to jobs and service requests generated through work orders, scheduled maintenance programs or by emergency call-in. Performs other general maintenance and repair duties as directed.

Minimum Requirements

Four years' journey level experience in one or more of the trades involving access control or locksmithing, or formal apprenticeship training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of code requirements relating to building access and egress control devices.

Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations. Ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public, and provide exceptional customer service. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Basic computer skills to accurately maintain record systems/information and software-based databases; and utilize other computer applications as necessary to perform the job responsibilities.

Ability to install, modify, repair and replace a variety of networked access systems and stand-alone access systems. Knowledge and ability to program, troubleshoot and operate different types of access control systems and software with ability to repair and/or correct connectivity and operational issues.

Experience performing skilled locksmith duties; ability to install, modify, repair and replace mechanical and electronic locking systems. Ability to create and maintain interchangeable cores and multi-level master key systems, and cut keys; ability to re-core locks. Experience and/or working knowledge of safes with dial and electronic locks.

Ability to install, modify, repair and replace building, door and mechanical hardware. Experience and/or working knowledge of ADA/Auto doors and related hardware. Ability to repair and/or replace mechanical door closers.

Ability to install, replace, repair, troubleshoot and maintain surveillance equipment such as IP cameras, analog cameras, and DVRs. Ability to clean and adjust equipment. Ability to monitor and maintain surveillance systems and DVR systems to ensure proper functionality and recording with ability to pull video footage.

Experience and working knowledge of hand and power tools, materials and hardware used in the skilled locksmith trade and access control. Ability to use manual and electronic tools; ability to work on, repair and troubleshoot electrical circuits with voltages up to 120 volts.

Physical requirements: ability to work from ladders, scaffolds and man-lifts at varying heights of up to 25 feet above grade; ability to lift, load, carry, move and manipulate tools, materials and hardware weighing up to 70 pounds; ability to perform repetitive lifting, bending, stooping, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling and reaching. Ability to follow safe precautions and utilize appropriate safety devices, equipment and gear to safely perform physical requirements and duties.

Ability to work occasional scheduled and unscheduled overtime and emergency call-back.

Hired candidate must pass a background check through the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI; must successfully complete a pre- employment, post offer physical; must obtain or possess a valid CA Driver License in accordance with California Department of Motor Vehicles; and must participate in the campus DMV Pull program.

Preferred Qualifications

Certificate of training in locksmithing and master keying from an accredited institution of locksmithing.

Familiarity with UCR campus and knowledge of UCR policies and procedures.
