A major focus of this department is the formulation and implementation of strategic communications initiatives, plans and events. The marketing programs are targeted toward critical internal and external stakeholders and help address UCLA's ability to compete for the best students and faculty. Clients include, but not limited to academic and administrative units, including undergraduate and graduate education and the Chancellor's Office.

In print and online, UCLA Magazine covers UCLA and its impact on the larger world around it, offering lively and in-depth reporting on the research and discoveries, arts and culture, sports, and public service that make the university one of the most well-known and respected public research institutions in the world, while also serving as a guide to consumers of UCLA's cultural and recreational offerings. The UCLA Magazine takes information about UCLA, strategically turns it into engaging stories and experiences, and shares it in ways that make it accessible and engaging; helps campus partners by providing communications expertise and consultation; complete communications services; guided messaging and strategy, enabling partners across campus to communicate more effectively.

Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Associate Editor works in partnership and collaboration with Editorial Director to develop the overarching strategic framework and development of the high quality, well-written, well-designed, and timely quarterly print publication of UCLA Magazine that serves the needs of UCLA while engaging its readership in an editorial environment with broad appeal. Working hours may include weekends, evenings and holidays and light travel is required. Percentage of Time: 100 Shift Start: 8:00 am Shift End: 5:00 pm Qualifications for Position

1. 7-8+ years of progressively responsible experience in magazine or other print and online publishing, public relations, advertising, marketing or a related communications field.

2. Bachelor's degree and master's degree or equivalent work experience.

3. Writing skills to write news and feature articles and to edit copy with clarity, accuracy and adherence to journalistic and university style guidelines. Outstanding writing skills to effectively communicate to a variety of audiences in various media including letters, evaluations, event stories, program summaries, advertisements, brochures and press releases. Skill in proofreading and in headline and cut-line writing.

4. Creativity, news judgment and ability to formulate and spot good stories. Ability to translate complex concepts into understandable prose. Ability to distill complex academic stories into compelling, easy to digest language to which that target audiences can digest and respond.

5. Demonstrated ability to research, collect and organize data and material from diverse sources; able to translate complex material.

6. Proven track record in writing compelling copy (headlines, body copy, web copy, print and broadcast media), for advertising, feature articles, brochures, event collateral, Web and e-mail copy, video scripts, case statements, presentations, direct mail letters and other marketing materials.

7. Demonstrated strategic thinking skills, understanding of the intended audience and proven experience in translating these skills to creative, as well as planning, design, development, and implementation.

Must have superior multitasking skills; quick turnaround without sacrificing quality.
