Departmental Overview

This position involves professional engineering and engineering technician support as part of academic instructional lab and/or research projects and programs. Engineering activities include the design, construction, testing of experimental systems, operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, and documentation. Engineering Technicians may be assigned duties within a single discipline (e.g., electrical) or span a range of disciplines [Note: for machine specialty work in a research or lab setting, see Research and Laboratory Job Field, Lab Mechanician Job Family].

This position exists to provide professional engineering development and maintenance support of the facilities and equipment for the Marvell Nanofabrication Laboratory. The laboratory is a unique 15,000 sq. ft. ultra-clean, particle-free facility that houses over 170 pieces of semiconductor process equipment which serve the research needs of more than 500 researchers.


25% With support and guidance from senior engineer, provide a broad range of professional semiconductor equipment engineering services for supporting equipment used in research projects. Participate in meetings, tool startups and assist process staff in characterizing new processes. Use critical thinking to solve complex problems. Work in teams as required. Meet with Principal Investigators (PI's), the NanoLab Director, research staff and researchers to resolve issues. Contribute designs to develop and improve tools and tool reliability. Schedule and perform preventative maintenance. For select assigned equipment, maintain a spare parts inventory. Provide part numbers for purchase. Liaison with vendors for support services.

25% With support and guidance from senior process engineer, perform short loop process tests for equipment state of health verification and for lab wide quality monitoring program. Assist in developing new process recipes. Become familiar with laboratory CMOS baseline process. Perform short loop process tests for baseline process.

10% With support and guidance from senior engineer, troubleshoot and repair electronics, DC, RF, power supplies and matching networks, logic and control systems as needed. Recommend component upgrades.

10% With support and guidance from senior engineer, troubleshoot and repair high vacuum systems such as cryopumps, ionpumps and turbo-molecular pumps and their associated systems, manifolds, valves and controls. Calibrate and repair vacuum metrology. Detect and resolve vacuum leak issues.

10% With support and guidance from senior engineer, support computer and programmable logic control as required for semiconductor process equipment. Work as a team member with the NanoLab computer support staff as needed. Backup software and hard drives.

10% Understand and use the Mercury database to mark equipment status, enable tools, enter comments and problem reports and add needed support documents (e.g., detailed web-based instruction manuals, CAD drawings). Writes annual report and additional reports as needed. Write, edit and revise equipment manuals, support documents, startup and shutdown procedures.

10% Assist in the development of, and follow standard operating procedures and best known methods for safety and to prevent injuries. Practice and comply with safe working practices to assure personal safety and safety to the lab environment for colleagues and researchers. Understand and work within guidelines to protect the environment.

Required Qualifications

* Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional design work of limited scope and complexity.
* Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
* Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
* Effective written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.
* Strong familiarity with a range of computer systems and programs, from Windows and MS Office to PLCs and ladder programming.
* Basic knowledge of networking and Unix.
* A good understanding of basic electronics and signals.
* A working understanding of vacuum science and systems -pumps, vacuum gauging, specialized seals and plumbing components, leak detection.
* A working understanding of high-purity gas delivery and gas control systems - gas manifolds, mass flow controllers, specialized seals and plumbing components.
* Familiarity with broad range of micro/nanofabrication and semiconductor processing equipment.
* Hands on experience with thin film deposition equipment for physical vapor deposition (PVD) or atomic layer deposition (ALD).
* Bachelors degree in related area (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering,Chemical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics.) or equivalent experience.

* The salary range designated for this position: $61,600 - $93,900; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
