Departmental Overview

Help us ensure UC Berkeley's laboratories are safe and compliant facilities for teaching and research. On behalf of campus executives, UC Berkeley's Office of Environment Health and Safety (EH&S) is leading the implementation of the Lab Safety Culture Change Initiative. This initiative is designed to enhance laboratory safety and foster a culture that promotes compliance and best practices within the framework of existing regulations and new University policies.

To achieve these goals, we are seeking experts in several areas to be a part of this critical team. The initiative focuses on numerous fronts including Chemical Hygiene, Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) development and review, lab safety training, laboratory inspections and follow-up activities, marketing/communication, information tracking, and a variety of reporting activities.

Responsibilities

The Web Applications Developer will evaluate, design, develop, modify, and debug web applications that support the mission of the Office of Environment, Health & Safety. In addition to working with the other team members, the Web Applications Developer will work with safety specialists, management, researchers, students, and the greater campus community.

We develop new applications as well as support a variety of legacy systems. In addition to the programs that support the Lab Safety Culture Change Initiative, we also develop applications to support Emergency Management, Fire & Life Safety, Environmental Protection, Hazardous Waste Disposal, Radiation Safety, Industrial Hygiene, and Workplace Safety.

The Web Applications Developer will do front and back-end web development, with an emphasis on usability. In addition to programming, they will perform testing, generate documentation, provide training, and do analysis to solve business problems. They will have the opportunity to work on committees, participate in professional training, and attend industry conferences.

At the request of campus management (EH&S Director, VC Administration, UCPD Chief, or designated alternate), must be available in a campus disaster or campus hazardous material release/threatened release, to serve in the appropriate emergency response role based upon expertise and, where applicable, designated departmental role.

Required Qualifications

- Requires thorough knowledge of web application development.
- Proven UI skills: HTML/HTML5, CSS, Javascript libraries (JQuery eg.), Usability.
- Proven understanding of industry standard web application frameworks, such as: MVC, ORM, HQL, JSP/JSTL, Velocity, FreeMarker, etc.
- Required proficiency in Java, SQL.
- Proficiency in programming languages, applications and standards: XML, Perl, LDAP, HTML, AJAX, Web Services, and JavaScript. Useful but not required: 4D, FileMaker.
- Experience with developer tools: SVN, Eclipse/MyEclipse, MySQL.
- Requires advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation.
- Broad range of technical knowledge and professional experience in computer and network software, hardware, utilities and operating systems including UNIX, Windows and Mac.
- Must be able to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
- Requires ability to understand business needs and how business systems can support those needs.
- Must be self-motivated, work independently or as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills.
- Must have advanced skills in developing web applications, web programming languages and object oriented programming concepts.

Education/Training:
- Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

-Understanding of scientific disciplines including Chemistry, Hazardous Materials desirable.
Licenses or certifications, if any:
Java Programming Certification desirable.
