Job Description

Overview

The Release of Information Specialist will be responsible for assisting in the coordination of the daily activities in the release of information area. The Specialist will ensure that all requests are HIPAA compliant, completed in a timely manner and within the standards set by law, will handle complicated and special requests, and will interact with attorneys and patients regarding legal issues.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities

* Receives and reviews Authorizations for Release of Information and determines if the release of health information is appropriate and in keeping with state and federal laws and HIPAA Regulatory Guidelines
* Prepares records for release after analyzing the requests and determining the health information pertinent to the request;
* Monitors and forwards health information requests to appropriate areas within the institution;
* Releases health information phone requests and by facsimile in emergency situations following verification
* Other dutie as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management and one (1) year of medical or legal experience - OR - an Associate's Degree and three (3) years' of medical or legal experience - OR - an Associate's degree with a current RHIT (Registered Health Information Tech) or RHIA (Registered Health Information Admin) and one (1) year of medical or legal experience.
* Current RHIT or RHIA may be substituted for two (2) years of experience.
* Must obtain RHIT or RHIA within two (2) years of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Current RHIT or RHIA or eligibility preferred
