Broad Scope and Function

The position is responsible for conducting a variety of research tasks for clients of ISR. This includes conceptualizing the research problem, developing appropriate measures and instruments (questionnaires, interviews, observational schedules), supervising data collection and data entry, outlining and executing analysis, including applying appropriate statistical tests, designing tables and graphics for the display of results, and assisting in writing research reports.

Reporting Relationship

The position reports directly to and receives general supervision from the Institute Director or designee. The position may receive periodic work direction from the Research Analyst II or higher-level position. When other faculty members are directing ISR contracts, the position works with the project directors in accomplishing the research tasks within priorities set by the Institute Director or designee. This position supervises student research assistants in their performance of tasks that support projects under this person’s direction.

Conditions of Employment

This position is a full-time, non-exempt (eligible for overtime pay), benefited position, with a defined contribution retirement plan through TIAA. (The position is not covered under the California Public Employees’ Retirement System.) Continued employment in this position is dependent upon funding and the mutual consent of University Enterprises and the employee, and either University Enterprises or the employee, can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Program continuation is contingent upon funding.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate social science discipline plus at least 6 hours of research methods and/or statistics coursework at the graduate level or equivalent combination of education and/or work experience.

2. Demonstrated understanding of questionnaire and interview construction and knowledge of applied research design.

3. Demonstrated experience with computer software programs for statistical analysis and database management.

4. Demonstrated understanding of statistical and data processing techniques as they are applied in social science research.

5. Demonstrated analytical skills and the ability to understand, review and analyze information to find underlying details.

6. Ability to manage multiple tasks with competing timelines and deliverables.

7. Excellent report writing skills with the ability to orally present/recommend findings suggested by the data.

8. Must pass a background check, which may include fingerprinting. Must continue to meet the established standards.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Master’s Degree in an appropriate social science discipline.

2. Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computers, telephones, calculators, copiers and FAX.

Work is performed in an office environment; continuous contact with staff, campus community, and the public.
