UNION HILL SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION STUDENT SUPPORT PARAPROFESSIONALS

The major role of the Student Support Paraprofessional is to assist in and support the instructional program to which they are assigned as well as to provide direct instruction to students in accordance with the direction of the credentialed teacher.

DUTIES

* Provide direct instruction/supervision to students individually, in small groups, in the lunch room, classroom, and/or on the playground

(Note: Ed Code allows an instructional assistant to supervise students in a classroom or on the playground when the teacher is not present.)


* Assist with record keeping and management systems


* Prepare materials under the guidance of the teacher


* Help to motivate students and encourage them to work to their capacity


* Assist with classroom routines


* Understand and communicate the school rules to students


* Assist substitute teachers with classroom and school procedures


* Assist with the assessment of students


* Coordinate instructional activities with teacher


* Assist mainstreamed students as appropriate


* Assist students with personal care activities due to the student's impaired ability to perform or complete personal care activities such as toileting and/or feeding


* Attend staff meetings, SST, and IEP meetings as appropriate


* Read email routinely and arrange for substitutes as needed


* Assist students to and from buses, lifting students, an/or pushing wheelchairs when

necessary


* May assist student with personal care functions such as toileting assistance and dressing*


* Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher or school administrators

QUALIFICATIONS



Persons hired to this position after July 1, 2001 must meet the "highly qualified" requirements as described in No Child Left Behind regulations:

(A) completed at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education;

(B) obtained an associate's (or higher) degree; or

(C) met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal State or

local academic assessment -

(i) knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics; or

(ii) knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate

Ability to establish good rapport with children of various grade levels and abilities; understand their needs and social development

* Ability to give clear instructions to children and communicate effectively with school personnel


* Ability to remain flexible


* Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding staff and students


* Maintain a positive and enthusiastic professional attitude


* Ability to write coherently and correctly


* Ability to work independently with students with little direct supervision

SUPERVISION

The Instructional Assistant shall be considered a district employee based upon the categorical and general education funding. Student Support Paraprofessionals will be under the direct supervision of the credentialed teacher to whom they are assigned and the general supervision of the Principal or his/her designee.

WORK YEAR

The Student Support Paraprofessional will normally work 180 days per year on the actual days of student attendance and during the 2 contract and 1 staff development days prior to the start of the school year.

* With consent to perform this duty a personal care differential of 50 cents per hour will be added to the position.
