Job Description

Job Summary

This individual will be responsible to coordinate and control the transmission and distribution of power to ensure safe and dependable service within Company guidelines.  Each Transmission and Distribution System Operator has the responsibility and authority to take actions that are needed to ensure the reliability of the Bulk Electric System and alleviate operating emergencies.  Actions to include operating equipment and shedding firm load to alleviate emergencies.  Each System Operator shall comply with all directives from the Reliability Coordinator and/or Transmission Operator (PJM).

Responsibilities:

  • Regional Transmission Operations – Receive and act on emergency procedure messages and directives from PJM RTO, participate in PJM/NERC and Company sponsored training and drills to maintain a high level of emergency preparedness to maintain system adequacy.  Maintain valid PJM Transmission Certification and obtain NERC Transmission or Reliability Coordinator Certification. Obtain the required yearly NERC continuing education credits (70). 
  • Transmission Switching – Direct the performance of transmission switching for normal outages and restoration of the system during emergencies.  Evaluate UGI Transmission Outage Application and PJM eDART requests to remove lines and equipment from service, analyze the effects of such outages on system reliability, plan restoration measures in the event of adverse contingencies, and grant or deny such requests.  In collaboration with the requesting party(ies) , schedule approved outages.  Design, review, and dispatch switching orders. 
  • Distribution Service Delivery – Direct the restoration of electric system outages.  Receive, analyze, and dispatch emergency work requests related to system trouble.  In collaboration with the appropriate supervisors, dispatch work requests to repairmen.  Callout engineers, technicians, and repairmen as required to restore the system to normal as expeditiously as possible using applicable callout procedures.  Collect and record outage description and cause information.  Maintain proficiency in applicable operating procedures

  • Other – Check system maps for correctness and forward corrections to the Mapping and Records Department.  Make changes to the System Operator pegboard to reflect additions and removal of equipment.  Respond to callouts and overtime, perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of NERC/FERC regulations.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical theory and economics.
  • Basic knowledge of substation equipment and operations;                                              
  • Relay/communications; power station operations.          
  • PJM Transmission System Operator Certification
  • NERC Transmission or Reliability Coordinator Certification
  • 70 hours of NERC continuing education required annually
  • Knowledge of the UGI electrical system, its Safety Rules, Operating Instructions, and System Operator criteria.

Working Conditions

Education

  • Two-year Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent related work experience.

  • NERC Transmission or Reliability Coordinator Certification

  • PJM Transmission System Operator Certification
