Job Description

Job Summary

An entry level electrical substation maintenance position exists for an individual with qualifications, skills, knowledge and abilities to perform work associated with the installation, maintenance, operation, inspection, testing and repair of electrical and mechanical substation equipment.

 

Knowledge & Skills

The successful candidate must:

  • Successfully complete a written and physical work sample and work behavior assessment.
  • Have an aptitude for working with hand tools, power tools and common electrical test equipment and willingness to progress within the department (*)
  • Will be required to work a reasonable amount of planned and emergency overtime, making available to supervisor an acceptable means of off-hour contact by telephone.
  • Must have and retain a valid motor vehicle operator's license, which does not restrict driving as to the type of transmission or hours of operation.
  • Must possess or obtain a Class B - Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within first 6-months of employment with no restrictions, and pass a DOT physical.
  • Possess a general knowledge of electricity (AC & DC circuits).
  • Be willing to work a reasonable amount of planned and emergency overtime, making available to supervisor an acceptable means of off-hour contact by telephone.
  • Be knowledgeable of electrical maintenance, construction practices, standards, electrical theory and safety precautions used in working on high and low voltage electrical circuits.
  • Possess the ability to read, interpret, revise and work from blueprints or circuit diagrams and troubleshoot (electrical & mechanical) circuits and devices.
  • Ability to operate various types of industry specific equipment and machinery (elevating platforms, bucket trucks/material handlers).
  • Possess good computer skills for equipment recordkeeping and inspection records.
  • Have good communications skills and the ability to work cooperatively with supervision, co-workers and contractors.
  • Be safety-minded and possess the knowledge of applicable laws, codes, and safety-related work practices common to electrical utility work (ie. OSHA 1910.269, NESC).

Note (*):The successful candidate must progress to Substation Maintenance Man 2nd Class within two years and then to Substation Maintenance Man 1st Class by the end of the fourth year. To be accepted into this position the candidate must pass pre-employment skill and work behavior assessments, alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance screening and a driver and criminal background checks.
