Job Description

Job Duties
Various duties including but not limited to: Review of physicians' notes to determine if they meet documentation requirements; extrapolation and application of surgical codes as applicable across all anatomical subsections for various surgical specialties; processing of inpatient charges, quality reviews, computer work (Excel, Word, MS Office, etc), training, filing, photocopying, information gathering, assistance in processing physicians' billing documents, faxing, detailed checking of documents for accuracy, compiling of lists, checking and entering information into EPIC, coding audits, and other assignments as directed by supervisor. Identify and report any potential compliance risks and reimbursement opportunities to Assistant Director for Compliance and Physician Education. A. Reviews Medical Records Reads and analyzes physicians' notes to assess them for documentation accuracy. This involves comparing physician documentation to established Evaluation and Management Guidelines to certify the appropriate category of billing and the correct level of billing within that category. Additionally, the dates of service, CPT codes, place of service and diagnostic codes billed must be corroborated in the medical record. This assessment is required for several job functions: -Medicare audits -The University Professional Compliance Office annual assessment -Internal Audits -Physician requests for documentation review -Clarification of inpatient billing card discrepancies -EPIC experience B. Extrapolation and application of surgical codes as applicable for Interventional Radiology using Current Procedural Terminology it ensure coding standards are met. C. Processes Online Billing Documents: -Retrieves charge documents via internet -Assigns physician billing numbers -Verifies all information supplied -Answers physician questions regarding online system -Prepares completed forms for data entry -Assists with quality reviews for junior team members for all surgical specialties - Assists and follows standardized automated processes set for surgical specialties -Assists with surgical database, OPTIME needs, and Charge Entry Logs D. Corresponds with physicians regarding billing issues by attending meetings with Assistant Director or on own, via phone, email, fax etc E. Maintains Production Standards and Turn Around Time. Targets consist of a variety of procedural coding including all surgical specialties F. Maintains Quality Standards: Quality Reviews of 95% or better. Meets production standards while maintaining quality, accuracy, and neatness Reviews new policy and procedures, standards and guidelines pertaining to coding to ensure an up-to-date knowledge and experience level. . G. Processes Charges in Error and Re-bills H. Contacts care facilities for face sheets and other information as needed I. Reads publications and attends seminars to remain current on correct coding and billing procedures. J. Provides a resource for co-workers in other areas on inpatient and outpatient charge document review, and on coding. Assists in training new staff. K. Performs special assignments for all Med-Legal accounts, including entering charges, corresponding with physicians, ordering reports, assigning checks and maintaining files. L. Educates and trains co-workers in coding, billing and compliance issues as well as coding in-services to faculty of all surgical specialties. M. Assists with organization of audits. N. Assists with Physician Education Workshops by identifying education needs of teaching physicians with regard to documentation of services provided. O. Performs other duties as assigned by Assistant Director

Job Qualifications
Certified as a Professional Coder from the American Academy of Professional Coders (or other national coding organization) to be maintained annually. Minimum of 2 years experience abstracting Interventional Radiology procedures required. Detailed knowledge of Medical Terminology and its application; Detailed knowledge and understanding of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems; Knowledge of CMS and local carrier regulations and requirements for documenting/billing physician services at a teaching hospital; Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology; Extensive knowledge of Medical Record content; Experience as Medical Record Abstractor; Ability to accurately assign ICD-10 and CPT codes; Knowledge of HIPAA requirements; Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information; Ability to meet established continuing education requirements by attending required training workshops, reading materials in order to maintain yearly CEUs required for Certified Professional Coder. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with physicians and staff; Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal supervision; Skill in prioritizing and performing a variety of duties Oral communication skills; Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word; Good command of English Grammar Agreeable attitude regarding assignment variety
